Hoops is an educational basketball game from Joe Hammons that turns reading and arithmetic drills into a scoring contest. Children of all ages earn points by reading the 700 most common English words or by solving basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems on the court.
Gameplay
Each correct answer translates into a basketball shot, with points scored against the clock. Difficulty scales with grade level, letting beginners practice sight words while older players sharpen their times tables.
Educational Focus
The 700-word vocabulary list targets the high-frequency words that account for the bulk of early reading material, while the arithmetic mode covers the four basic operations needed for elementary math.
For the Classroom and Home
Hoops was distributed as Macintosh shareware aimed at parents, teachers, and home-schoolers looking for drill software that does not feel like flashcards.
System Notes
The 1.0 release ships as a single BinHex archive intended for the classic Mac OS, distributed via Info-Mac and similar shareware channels of the period.
This file is part of the MacTrove archive. See the Thank You page for the upstream mirrors we rely on. It is BinHex encoded — use The Unarchiver to decode it.
