Words Hc

Words is a HyperCard-based guessing game in the tradition of Hangman, written by Richard Sweeny. The stack offers eight categories with seventy-five words each, eight chances per round, and a short description of the answer revealed at the close of every game.

How it plays

Each round picks a hidden word from the chosen category. You guess letters one at a time, with eight wrong guesses allowed before the round ends. When the round closes, the stack reveals both the word and a brief description, giving the game a light educational angle on top of the basic Hangman loop.

Look and feel

The author calls Words a colorful, very graphic-oriented stack, with placed pictures throughout. Because of the embedded color graphics, it is best run inside the full HyperCard 2.3 authoring environment; the free HyperCard Player will not display the placed images correctly.

Compatibility

Sweeny reports running the stack on a wide range of machines, from a Macintosh IIci up through a Power Macintosh 9500, without trouble. The only caveat noted is the HyperCard Player limitation above.

Distribution

Words ships through the Info-Mac archive as words-hc.hqx under the game/word category, alongside other word and puzzle stacks of the era.
