Zarvox Is Here is a 1997 HyperCard oddity by Ben Sharvy that styles itself as an experiment in "artificial intelligence and beyond." Roughly three-quarters of the experience is delivered through synthesized speech, leaning on the Mac's Speech Manager to deliver Zarvox's pronouncements to the player.
Concept
The piece presents itself with the tagline "Zarvox is one, Zarvox is all. Lose your religion to Zarvox" -- a tongue-in-cheek satire of cult or AI-worship tropes built on top of HyperCard.
Author
Released by Ben Sharvy (bsharvy@efn.org) and uploaded to Info-Mac in the late 1990s.
System Requirements
Runs on 68k Macs from System 6.x through Mac OS 9. The speech features -- which the author notes are 3/4 of the fun -- require the Apple Speech Manager and HyperCard 2.3 or later.
Distribution
Freeware, mirrored on Info-Mac as zarvox.hqx and on Macintosh Garden.
