About

Funny Bits From Your Talking Chips is a small Mac OS novelty app by Betsy Wilczek that turns your machine into a stand-up comedian. A colorful animated "circuit board" houses talking "chips" that read jokes out loud through the Mac's built-in speech voices and laugh on cue.

The premise

The pitch is exactly what the name says: "because your Mac really wants to laugh and tell you jokes." The free demo ships with 30 jokes; the paid version expands the database to 762 jokes spanning seven categories, including knock-knocks, puns, computer humor, and a kid-safe set.

Voices, laughs, and alarms

You pick from 12 Mac speech voices (Bubbles, Victoria, and friends) and seven laugh categories ranging from "happy" to "demented." Jokes or laughter can be wired up as an alarm clock, a periodic sanity-saver, or a desktop double-click trigger that plays one item and quits.

System requirements

Funny Bits is a PowerPC Mac application requiring Mac OS 8.5 or later. It was distributed through the author's site at funnybits.com and mirrored on Tucows, where it picked up a four-cow rating.

Preservation

The Tucows mirror of the demo was donated to the Internet Archive in 2004 (tucows_215777_Funny_Bits_From_Your_Talking_Chips), and the original Info-Mac submission lives on as funny-bits.hqx in the funet game tree.
