The Glass Bead Game Tutor is an introductory package for the Glass Bead Game, a two-player abstract board game by Christian Freeling whose name nods to Hermann Hesse's 1943 novel Das Glasperlenspiel. Authored by Ed van Zon of MindSports and submitted to Info-Mac, the tutor walks an interested layman through the rules, strategy, tactics, and a small library of problems and annotated games.
What is in the package
The download bundles the rule book together with chapters on strategy and tactics, a set of practice problems with worked solutions, and recordings of actual games played out with author commentary, giving newcomers a guided path from first move to competitive play.
How it is built
The tutor is delivered as HTML pages augmented with Java applets that display the board and let the reader step through positions interactively. Because everything ships locally, no network connection is required once the archive is unpacked.
Requirements
You need a Java-enabled web browser of the period, such as Netscape Navigator 3.0 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, running on a Mac that can execute Java applets in the browser.
Author and origin
