Waste Of Time is a small Macintosh shareware diversion preserved in the classic Mac archive. As the name suggests, it is a deliberately lightweight time-killer rather than a deep game - the kind of single-purpose toy that thrived in the System 7 and Mac OS 8 shareware ecosystem, distributed in compressed StuffIt and BinHex bundles.
What it is
The title is self-deprecating shareware humour: a quick, low-commitment program made to fill an idle moment between real work. Programs in this niche typically run in a single window, need only a mouse, and expect to be quit as soon as the user has had enough.
Where it fits
Waste Of Time sits alongside the many small "desk toy" style downloads that filled Mac shareware catalogues and FTP mirrors in the 1990s. They were cheap to write, easy to share, and gave authors a low-stakes way to experiment with the Mac toolbox.
Distribution
Like most shareware of its era, the program circulated through Info-Mac, university FTP mirrors, and CD-ROM compilations as a StuffIt or BinHex archive. The header text in those archives is the most reliable surviving source for author and version metadata.
Compatibility
Classic Mac OS only. Plays back today through 68k or PowerPC emulators such as Mini vMac, Basilisk II, and SheepShaver depending on the original binary's architecture.
This file is part of the MacTrove archive. See the Thank You page for the upstream mirrors we rely on. It is BinHex encoded — use The Unarchiver to decode it.
