Hiarcs Chess 1.0 Demo is the Macintosh demonstration release of the HIARCS commercial chess program, a multi-time computer chess world champion in its DOS incarnation. The demo plays full games and loads positions, but ships with reduced playing strength and several disabled features.
Engine Pedigree
HIARCS - Higher Intelligence Auto Response Chess System - was authored by Mark Uniacke and earned multiple world computer chess championships in its DOS releases, making this Mac port a notable arrival for serious chess players on Apple hardware.
What the Demo Includes
The demo can play complete games against the user and read in chess games and positions. A library of 120 sample games is bundled, giving users material to load, replay, and analyze inside the program.
Demo Limitations
To protect the commercial release, the engine's playing strength is severely reduced compared to the retail version, and convenience features such as saving games are disabled.
Use Case
Best treated as a working preview - enough to evaluate the interface and engine character before purchasing the full HIARCS product, rather than as a long-term playing partner.
