About

OTChess 1.5.2 is a two-player peer-to-peer Internet chess program for the classic Macintosh, released in late 1997. It uses Open Transport for networking, with one player acting as host and the other connecting by name or IP address; cancelling the connection dialog drops the game into a local single-user mode.

Networking

OTChess connects two Macs directly over TCP/IP using Open Transport. The connection dialog accepts a player name and the hostname or IP of the opponent. Failed lookups raise an alert and re-prompt for the host instead of silently failing.

Interface

Moves are written into a scrolling window on the right side of the main board as they happen. The same window doubles as a chat panel so the two players can talk during the game.

Requirements

System 7.1.2 or later, with System 7.5.3 or later recommended. Open Transport 1.1 or later is required. Tested on an LC 475, PowerMac 7500/100, PowerBook 520C, and a PowerComputing PowerBase 240 under System 8.

Changes in 1.5.2

Reverses the board orientation and corrects square colors, fixes broken AppleEvent support so a board appears at launch, and shows a progress dialog during host connection that the user can cancel back to local mode.
