About

Chess Set! 1.1 is a HyperCard stack by Matthew Eli Blain (Washington University in St. Louis), released October 31, 1993. It is deliberately not a chess engine: the stack provides a chess board and pieces you can move freely, save positions on, and play head-to-head with a friend either locally or across an AppleTalk network via Apple Events.

What It Is (and Isn't)

Chess Set! does not play chess and enforces almost no rules about how pieces move. It is a digital chess board for human-vs-human play, position study, and saved-game review rather than a computer opponent.

Networked Play

Two players on an AppleTalk network can share a board through Apple Events, letting the stack sync moves between Macs. This was a notable trick for a 1993 HyperCard stack and showcases the era's interest in lightweight collaborative software.

Customization

The author explicitly invites users to make their own chess boards inside the stack, taking advantage of HyperCard's editable card model. The stack is freely modifiable.
