Square Wars Plus is a small Classic Mac shareware action-puzzle title in which the playfield is a grid of squares and the contest is for territory. The Plus edition expands an earlier release with extra modes or options layered onto the base mechanic of claiming and defending squares against an opponent.
Premise
The core loop pits the player against a computer or human rival in a fast contest to convert squares to their own color. Tactics turn on timing and on contesting the lines and corners that decide larger regions of the board.
Mac presentation
The game uses the Mac's standard windowed interface with mouse-driven input, fitting the late 1990s shareware style. Sounds and graphics are minimal but clean, designed to run smoothly on modest 68k or early PowerPC hardware.
Distribution
Square Wars Plus circulated through the usual Mac shareware channels of its time, including Info-Mac mirrors and shareware CD-ROM compilations bundled with magazines. It is a small download and self-contained.
Why it survives
It is preserved as part of the broad ecosystem of independent grid- and territory-based Mac games that thrived in the shareware era.
