Kalaha is a Macintosh adaptation of the ancient mancala family of sowing games, released by Joachim Kulla in 1998. Built around a board game tradition the author traces back roughly seven thousand years to Egypt, the program offers an easy-to-learn but highly addictive count-and-capture experience for solo Mac players.
Gameplay
Following standard Kalah rules, players scoop seeds from one of their pits and sow them counter-clockwise around the board, capturing into a home store whenever the last seed lands favorably. The simple ruleset hides considerable strategic depth.
Compatibility
Version 1.1 ships as a Fat Binary, running natively on PowerPC Macs as well as on suitably equipped 68k machines. It needs roughly 800 KB of free RAM and System 7 or later.
Distribution
Kalaha is ten-dollar shareware. The author asks that the game not be redistributed for profit or bundled onto CD-ROM compilations without permission.
