Snood v1.0 is the original 1996 release of David M. Dobson's puzzle game, the first version of what would become one of the most widely circulated Mac shareware titles of the late 1990s. Players aim a cannon at a hanging arrangement of cartoon faces called Snoods and try to clear the board by matching colors.
How It Plays
When two or more Snoods of the same color are hit by another identical Snood, all three (or more) vanish from the board. Pieces left without a connection to the top fall away, which is where the cascading scoring comes from.
Lineage
The design draws on the same hexagonal-grid lineage as the 1980s arcade hit Puzzle Bobble, but Dobson's hand-drawn Snood characters and shareware distribution made it a distinct cultural artifact of the classic Mac scene.
Version 1.0
This entry preserves the original 1.0 build specifically; later versions (1.1, 2.1, 3.0, and the OS X-era 4.x line) expanded the modes and graphics, but 1.0 is the starting point of the series.
Platform
The build targets classic Mac OS and runs comfortably under Mac OS 9 and emulators such as SheepShaver and Basilisk II.
