SMTP unaccessible Troubleshooting 5 posts Sep 14, 2002 — Sep 14, 2002
I know this will be kinda difficult for anyone to solve with this little information but here goes:

I am hooked up to the Internet through the LAN in my Hall of Residence an d can access everything fine Except my SMTP server for sending out mail. I'm using Entourge and can connect to my IMAP server to receive mail but cannot connect to the SMTP.
It just gives me an error message saying:

A connection error has occurred

Error: -23016

Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this, or any idea what the problem may be, a workaround perhaps that I could setup on my computer to send mail?
Some info is here about the setup
http://www.wh.uni-heidelberg.de/cte...rnet-anschluss/

Thanks for any help - the Internet people here never answer emails so are pretty useless.

Cheers Ry
Ok well I managed to fix it just now by using the university SMTP server rather than my usual SMTP server. Perhaps there is some sort of firewall setup blocking the ports required by external SMTP servers?

Cheers Ry
have you tried turning on authentication from within entourage? that sometimes helps.
To prevent use of their servers for spam, a lot of ISPs allow access to their SMTP server only if you are connected via their network. I would guess this is the case--not that the university firewall is preventing it. Just don't forget to return the settings if you are ever off the university network, as the same thing probably applies the other way.

I originally thought that might be the problem and tried it but it didn't help. It probably is as the poster above was saying re. SPAM etc.
