Crystal Caliburn is a 1993 Arthurian-themed pinball simulator by LittleWing, published in North America by StarPlay Productions. Built around a Knights-of-the-Round-Table fantasy, it became one of the defining digital pinball releases of the early Macintosh era and a frequent benchmark for what software pinball could feel like on a 68k Mac.
Table Design
The playfield spans three vertical levels connected by 3D ramps, with quest-style targets that send the ball through Excalibur-themed missions. Multiball play uses up to three balls at once, and ramp combos drive the scoring system rather than simple bumper grinding.
Physics and Performance
LittleWing emphasized authentic ball motion: the engine uses a custom high-speed routine to keep the simulation smooth even during multiball, a non-trivial feat on the 68030/68040 hardware that was typical when the game shipped.
Reception
The game won the Software Publishers Association's Best Simulation award and was favorably noted in mainstream press including the New York Times, helping cement LittleWing's reputation alongside their later Loony Labyrinth and Tristan releases.
Compatibility
The original release targets System 6.0.7 and later in 256 colors with 4 MB of RAM. A v1.0.4 patch and subsequent PowerPC-native build extended support through Mac OS 9.2.2, and the game is widely run today under SheepShaver and Mini vMac.
