Released in 2002 by Mitchell Haile under the Degana Games label, Forma is a Carbonized Macintosh puzzle/arcade title in which the player arranges falling block shapes into matching strings of three or more along diagonal, vertical, and horizontal axes. This catalog entry reflects version 2.0, distributed as a 6.43 MB BinHex archive.
Setting and theme
Forma is a wholly abstract puzzler with no narrative or characters. The presentation is built around a clean grid playfield filled with simple geometric block shapes in saturated colors, scored against a high-score table rather than story progression.
Gameplay
Blocks descend into the play area in vertical or horizontal pairings. The player rotates and places them so that matching shapes line up in diagonal, vertical, or horizontal runs of three or more, at which point the run clears and the rest of the stack collapses inward.
Strategic depth comes from minimizing gaps between shapes, since orphan blocks raise the stack toward the ceiling. Levels increase fall speed and shape variety, with the high-score screen recording the player's best runs across sessions.
Engine and technical changes
Version 2.0 is built as a Carbonized PowerPC binary that runs on Mac OS 8.1 (with the Carbon update) through Mac OS X. It requires roughly 12 MB of free RAM, CarbonLib 1.1 or later, and a display set to thousands or millions of colors. The Macintosh Garden entry confirms compatibility with the SheepShaver emulator.
Development and release
Haile distributed Forma through Degana Games as a small-team shareware release. Macintosh Garden archives both this 2.0 release as forma-20.hqx (6.43 MB) and the later 2.1.2 update as forma_mac_2.1.2.sit (5.74 MB), which folded in bug fixes and minor balance tweaks.
