Glider 4.0 is John Calhoun's side-scrolling arcade game in which the player pilots a paper airplane through the rooms of a house, riding lift from heater vents while dodging tables, shelves, balloons, and rival gliders. It is the first commercial release in the Glider series and the direct predecessor to Glider PRO.
Gameplay
Catch updrafts from floor vents to stay aloft and steer through cluttered rooms. Pick up power-ups such as batteries for extra speed, rubber bands to shoot obstacles, and spare gliders to extend your run.
What's new in 4.0
Adds polished art, improved physics, and a built-in room editor that lets players design and share their own houses, fueling a small community of fan-made levels and custom art files.
Author and publisher
Written by John Calhoun and published by Casady & Greene in 1991. Glider 4.0 grew out of Calhoun's earlier shareware versions and set the template for Glider PRO that followed.
System requirements
Runs on black-and-white or 16-color Macs across System 6.x through Mac OS 8.1. Version 4.09 is the recommended build for Power Macintosh hardware.
Legacy
Calhoun open-sourced Glider 4 in January 2016, preserving the source for hobbyists alongside the still-active Glider PRO community and modern ports.
