Wadtool is a Mac graphics management utility released in December 1998 by Phaedrus Qtensilius of Quakeintosh, aimed at level designers working with id Software's Quake. Despite the Doom-style WAD nickname, the program targets Quake's texture wads, filling a long-standing gap in Mac-side editing tools.
Origin
Announced on December 2, 1998 at http://wadtool.quakeintosh.com, the release positioned Wadtool as the first complete Mac solution for editing Quake textures.
Purpose
It gives map designers control over the graphic images that make up walls and objects in Quake levels, addressing a workflow that previously required Windows or DOS tools.
Audience
The press text pitches it at users of all abilities, from hobbyist mappers to experienced graphic artists building custom Quake content on Macintosh.
Distribution
Distributed through the Info-Mac game archive as wadtool-100.hqx, a BinHex 4.0 encoded download mirrored from the Quakeintosh site.
