Backstab is a multiplayer game client for Outland, the mid-1990s graphical multiplayer game network for Macintosh users. It is not a standalone application: it requires the Outland Gateway client and an active Outland connection, either over MacTCP or by dialing Outland's modems in Palo Alto, California.
What it is
Backstab is one of several titles built specifically for the Outland service, alongside Spaceward Ho, Chess, Reversi, and a graphical BBS. The application was developed by Adam Miller and is launched from inside an Outland Games folder kept next to the Gateway client.
About Outland
Outland was a commercial graphical multiplayer game network for Macintosh, reachable over the Internet via MacTCP or by dial-up modem. Players paid an hourly rate to access live multiplayer sessions.
Requirements
A 68020 or better Macintosh, System 7.0 or later, the Outland Gateway software, and either MacTCP or a 2400-baud-or-better modem.
Installation
Install the Outland Gateway first and create an Outland Games folder beside it. Decompress the Backstab archive and move the application into that Outland Games folder before connecting.
