Additional RA!'-1 will range from none·(in a servant) to 768K (full memory board) and upward (given extra memory bo'ards). In a 512K system (assuming a 512K memory board, 128K CPU F~OM, 128K CPL,J RAM), the CPU ROM and RAM account for one third of the memory in the entire system. It's extremely important that we use this CPU memory wisely. Careful coordination bet"veen POS hardware and software group will be required. This memo outlines some of the planning that snould begin 1mmec:Uate1y. 1'1ernory COntents and Budgf!ts we need to carefully select both ROM· ancJ RAf'-1 contents, and budget their use of memory. Possible ROM .contents include: · • diagnostics (CPU, memory, peripherals) • boot code (ini tiallzation, load from disk) . • hardware interface (cursoJ, mouse, keyboards, s·peaker, timers, clock, power, etc.) • drivers (built in disk, twiggy, profHe, priam, RS-232, printers) ,. • partial file system· (for booting, keyboard tables, preferences, etc.) • miniature dubugger • fonts · • QuickDraw Possible RAl'-1 contents include: ., • primary screen (32,...() • optional al temate s;creen (32K) • interrupt and trap vectors (defaults, soft vectors, etc.) 0 hardware interface global data (keyboard mapping, keyboard queue, timers, etc.) • QulcKDraw. global o~ata (screen size, address, etc.) · • disk buffers, caches: ' . ·. • debugger data area (regis,ters, oreakpolnts, etc.) Ard'li tecture The dependencies between tlhe possible ROM contents are complex. Both Alps and Keyboard Co. (bucket) keyswitches will be pursued as potential options at introduction. Other keyboard technologies will be investigated in parallel but may not be available at introduction. If a better alternative does turn up, it could be made available within a few months of introduction, either as a standard keyboard or as an option. Although the keyboard layout is nearly final, it has not frozen since it is not yet on the critical path. One remaining potential variation is the possible removal of the cursor cluster from the layout. 2. Engineering is concerned that the current cost objectives may not be feasible. 3. Although there is no requirement to have the Problem Analysis Guide (PAG) stowed within LISA, Engineering will continue to pursue methods by which the PAG may be attached to the main unit. 4. The current display has a refresh rate of 59.2 Hz, which violates the requirement of being within 1% of 60 Hz. Engineering will arrange for a side-by-side demonstration of the 59.2 Hz display against an identical 60 Hz display to see if the 59.2 version meets the product's requirement. III. SOFTWARE ENGINEERING AMENDMENTS I.' It is too early to tell Whether or not it will be possible to provide the level of integration and software sophistication desired on a 128K LISA. Future MRDs and performance analyses will resolve this issue. 2. Visicalc capabilities will be either built-into the File Cabinet to create the ''VISICABINET'' concept, or created as a separate product. This concern will be resolved in the VISICABINET MRD. 3. Implementation details of the user interface may have a significant impact on performance and product schedules •. These details will be resolved by May 1, 1980. 4. The degree of integration of the various software· modules has not been determined. Final resolution will involve basic capability/performance tradeoffs. IV. System on O.S. 5.2.3 (or later). There are also ~[p~mber of bugs that have been fixed in the:10.0 release. It is strongly recp~ended that you go to 10.2 on the Monitor at the same time you install 10~2 on O.S. 5.2.x. CAUTION: Beginning with this release, INTRINSIC.LIB can no longer be moved freely fronf the Moni tor to the O. This is ~::because the Development System contains some Intrinsic Units (in·*OBJIOLIB.OBJ on the Monitor and in OBJIOLIB.OBJ on the O.S.). s.. CAUTION: The O.S. release contains·files of "the same name as the Monitor release, but they are not the same files. (They were· linked against different PasLib files and there are compile time conditional compilation statements.) This will be remedied in a future release when we plan to have one Pas Lib and support for run-time conditionals. Major Changes: 1. Several Compiler/Code Generator bugs were fixed: a. P:= pointer (ord (Q) + expr); now generates correct code when expr contains P as a subexpression. Thanks to Brad Silverberg for an excellent bug report and some diagnostic support. Thanks to Rich Page for help with the fix. b. The Code Generator had a limit of 100 different External References per procedure which was not being checked. This limit has now been extended to 200 and a new Compiler Error message is generated when the limit is exceeded: 309 Too many external references. (note this in your Manual) Thanks to Chris Moeller for a good .bug report and example. c. The code generator had a bug in the computation of block numbers for large Units (greater than 64 blocks). The bug resulted in negative block numbers, which apparently worked OK on the Monitor. (Unit I/O must mask the sign bit). The bug was uncovered when FileIO began doing more I/O checking. Thanks to Chris Franklin for the bug report and example. 2J.-Aug-82 - 2 - PASCAL Development System (10.2) 2. An error in the 10.0 IUManager caused Lisa to reset whenever a new Unit or Segment was added to Intrinsic.lib. This has been fixed. Thanks to Lorraine Daniels for the bug report. 3. PackSeg now supports a single Pack Table for the O.S. PackSeg will ask an additional question about reading a table. If the response is positive, PackSeg prompts for a filename with the default being *PACKTABLE.LIB. If the response is negative, a unique table is built (as before). 4. DumpHex has had a bug fixed related to closing files which were not opened. 5. The Compiler, Code Generator, and IULinker make use of Rick Meyers Hardware drivers to report Elapsed Time. The time is measured from the beginning of execution to just before exit. Hence, the only repeatable times are …

Using the microsecond timer in Drivers, time is accumulated in each bucket and is saved along with a count of the number of times the bucket was entered. The typical sequence.would be as follows: Page 1 1) Enter the debugger for a given process and create one or more timing buckets (with the TB command). 2) Set a break point to stop execu'tion at some point. 3) Go. 4) When the breakpoint is reached print the timing summary (with the PT command). 5) Use the End Timing command to remove all buckets. The new commands are as follows: BT expr The Begin Timing specifies the process number. If the Begin Timing command is not given the current process is assumed. A process number of zero can be used to indicate domain O. TB addrl addr2 A Timing Bucket is created from addrl to addr2. PT Print Timing summary. printed as follows: There are five columns 1) Bucket number 2) Total time in this bucket 3) Number of times this bucket was entered 4) Starting address for this bucket 5) Ending address for this bucket End Timing prints tne timing summary and removes all of the timing buckets. KB expr Kill Bucket can be used to remove a single bucket. RT Reset Times will reset the timing and count tables leaving the current definition of the bucKets intact. NOTES: 1) All addresses are in the same process. 2) The process number is defined by either the BT command or the first TB, PT, KB or RT command. If the process number is not given in the BT command the current process is assumed. Sysmgr The Sysmgr has been modified so that the connection with the Apple is more rel iable. To: ·om: t t e: Subj: Lisa Software Rich Page, Ken Friedenbach and Ralph Sahm July 15, 1982 Pascal Development System Release 10.0 CAUTION!! ! This release is intended for use with O.S. release 5.2. If you use the Diskcopy utility or the Z(ero command in the Sysmgr from this release to upgrade a Profile, you will NOT be able to use that Profile with any older revisions of the Monitor. Overview Major changes in this release are as follows: 1) Approximately a two fold performance increase for Profiles. 2) The disk driver for the Profile now supports the following: a) Block headers (20 bytes) compatible with the Lisa O.S. Disks without headers are still supported. b) Interleave of 9:1 (for disks with headers). 3) The Monitor file system has been modified to relax the 77 file limit to 786 files per volume. 4) The Monitor can now be booted from the lower Twiggy drive (Use Command-G at boot time). 5) The Formatter utility now does a certification test to catch bad media. Media is currently not being tested by the vendor. 6) Filer and Sysmgr have been modified to support the changes in the Monitor file system and disk drivers. CAUTION: The Z(ero command in the new Filer now asks a new question. This may affect MON.STARTUP files and other execute files which attempt to initialize MEMORY: (#4:). 6) The Sysmgr and Monitor have been modified to ignore illegal values from the clock~ 7) The Compiler and Linker have been modified to provide better support for interfaces in IU library files.
