STARTING A NEW GAME To begin a new game, choose “New Garden...” from the File menu. Select a garden from the dialog and press the “Open” button. The layout of each garden does not change, but the locations of the items in it (except for the flowers) does each time you start a new game. MOVEMENT Using the Mouse To move using the mouse, first make sure the “Use Keys” option is not checked in the Settings dialog. Keep the cursor in the large square occupying the left part of the window. You'll notice that the cursor changes depending on where it is in the square. This is to indicate which direction you'll move when you click the mouse. When you press the mouse button, the man in the middle of the square (you) will begin to move, and will continue to do so until he runs into an obstacle. Using the Keyboard Go into the Settings dialog (found under the Options menu) and check the "Use Keys" option. By default, the keypad keys 8, 9, 6, 3, 2, 1, 4, and 7 move you in the North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, West, and Northwest directions respectively. If you'd like to change those settings, click the "Set Keys" button in the Settings dialog. Another dialog will appear with a keyboard. Click on the "radio button" switch at the bottom left of the window for the direction key you'd like to change. Then, either click on or press the key you want to use for that direction. Repeat this until all keys are set to your liking. Click OK. The keys you set will now move the man in their respective directions. IMPORTANT: An essential element of this game, and one that will be stressed throughout these notes, is that you must watch where you're going. You'll see why as you move on. MONEY Everything in the garden, except flowers and money itself, costs money. There is a limited supply of money in the garden, so spend it wisely. Money is represented by stacks of gold and silver coins. A stack of gold coins is worth $100. A stack of silver coins is worth $40. Whenever you see a stack of coins, walk over it to pick it up. Collect all the money you can find. You can't have too much. BUYING THINGS To buy something, you must first have enough money. Then, you must find it and walk over it. IMPORTANT: If you have the money to buy an item and you step on it, you WILL buy it! To avoid buying unneeded items, be careful where you step. COLLECTING FLOWERS The object of Rose Garden is to pluck as many flowers and collect as many prestige points as you can. The only way to escape the garden is to pluck the last flower: the rose. If you escape, you'll be given a bonus of 500,000 prestige points. (NOTE: Prestige points are registered in the prestige meter at the upper right of the screen. It's the one with the little blue ribbon icon.) Flowers must be plucked in order. (Press the "Flowers..." button below to see the order. Click on a flower to see its name.) To pick a flower, you must have at least the one preceding it. (The obvious exception being the fi…

RUBBER NINJAS MODDING TUTORIAL This tutorial is for users that want to make their own campaigns, characters and ragdolls for Rubber Ninjas. You can use mods only with the full version of Rubber Ninjas. If you are new to game modding it might be difficult for you to get your mods working. Don't worry, Rubber Ninjas will be updated often to include the best user made mods, so you can just download the latest version to benefit of new campaigns and content. If you are comfortable with game modding you can try to understand how things work just by checking out the files, they are pretty self-explanatory. A notice, the parser is not especially robust, so follow the files format closely (don't add extra spaces or new lines, invert order of things etc). Be sure to MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF RUBBER NINJAS before you mess around with the files. GENERAL STRUCTURE Campaigns, ragdolls and characters are all described by text files. These are simple text files, (not .doc or .rtf). The extension of these files is not .txt, still they can be opened and saved by a text editor, such as textedit for Mac, or Wordpad and Notepad++ for Windows (the normal Notepad does not work well). ON WINDOWS: Navigate to C:\Program Files\Rubber Ninjas (or wherever you installed the program) then open the "data" folder. ON MAC: Open the "Rubber Ninjas" application bundle. To do this right click (or ctrl-click) on the application icon and chose show package contents, then open the contents folder, then open resources folder, then the data folder. This "data" folder contains different folders: The walls folder contains the images used as textures for the spheres' walls. These images must be 2048x1024 pixels. You can customize these pictures or make new ones if you wish, then integrate them in your campaign as we’ll see later. The ragdolls folder contains files (with extension .ragd) used for specifying the shape of a character. The characters folder contains files (with extension .char) specifying a character, his name, his shape (through a ragdoll file), what weapons he can use etc. Each character file must specify a ragdoll file it uses, and 2 or more characters can use the same ragdoll file. Weapons folder contains files (extension .weap) that specify shape and properties of weapons. These files are very similar to the ragdoll files. The campaigns folder contains various campaign folders. Each campaign contains a CampaignSettings.txt file used to specify the campaign structure. Each campaign folder possibly contains also local characters, ragdolls, walls and weapons folders (that contain data for use only with this campaign). In the "data" folder there is also a 2PlayerSettings.txt file that specifies some settings for the 2 player games, as well as what characters are available for the 2 player fights. HOW TO MAKE A NEW CAMPAIGN To make a new campaign go in the campaigns folder, duplicate one of the original campaign folders, rename it to “my n…

Game Instructions Situation You are Vetvel, one of seven acolytes on Kira, a moon of the planet Lamina. Lamina is populated by seven intelligent species who have spent most of their histories in strife. The tiny colony on Kira was founded as a political experiment to demonstrate the ability of suitably- inclined Laminans of different species to live in harmony, The experiment came too late; Lamina fought a limited nuclear war, shattering its civilization and leaving the colonists on Kira stranded. Under the leadership of a remarkable person named Siboot, the Kirans founded a new civilization based on the development of telepathic powers and a universal telepathic language called eeyal. From their position on Kira, they beamed radio messages to the home planet, proselytizing their philosophy/religion. Under this influence, Lamina successfully re-civilized itself, coming to accept Kira as the spiritual center of its civilization and the leader of Kira, called the Shepherd, as its spiritual leader. One hundred and thirty-five years have passed since the nuclear war; there have been four Shepherds. Now Feslym, the fourth Shepherd, has died, and the time has come to replace him. The Shepherdship will be awarded to the first acolyte who garners eight auras of each of the three types: tanaga, katsin, and shial. Auras are a mental property associated with telepa- thy, and they confer upon their owner greater telepathic powers. Each acolyte has, by dint of much training, built up a goodly set of auras. But now the acolytes will engage in mental combat to acquire the remaining auras each needs to attain the perfect 8-8-8 set and become Shepherd. Mental combat Mental combat is fought at night, while you sleep. Your spirit travels into the Land of the Auras, there encountering the spirits of other acolytes. During an encounter, you wrap your- self in one of your auras, as does your opponent. A tanaga aura will defeat a katsin aura, a katsin aura will defeat a shial aura, and a shial aura will defeat a tanaga aura. Two auras of the same type stand off without a victor. The victor in mental combat gets to keep the aura of the loser. Players will normally try to play those auras that will win them the auras of which they have the greatest shortage. The trick to mental combat, then, is to learn how many auras your potential opponents have; if you have this information, you can readily anticipate what aura they will use in combat and counter it with the proper aura. Discovering what auras people have is the outermost challenge of the game. 1 Deals You spend most of your time during the day scurrying about trying to gather the informa- tion you need. Each morning, you awaken with a single item of information about each of the other acolytes. An item of information is called an “aura-count”; it is the number of auras of a single type (tanaga, katsin, or sh…

SAT Tutorial Introductory course to Sprite Animation Toolkit, by Ingemar Ragnemalm 1994. DRAFT! If I get no comments/corrections, I will assume it is perfect. C solutions by Richard Bannister 1995 *** Introduction This document introduces SAT at a very basic level. If you find it too hard to learn SAT from its demos, you can start here to get a short guided tour through the basics. The tutorial is divided into a few sections where some essential functions are explained, with a programming assignment after each. This tutorial will not explain each and every call in SAT. The goal with the tutorial is that you should understand the most fundamental goals, so you can explore the more advanced features with confidence, building your own SAT-using application in the process. Only some calls are defined here. See the manual for the ones used but not described. There are solutions for a number of assignments, and a resource file that all solutions share. You can use that resource file when making the assignments if you like, but you should get used to making graphics and putting together resource files as soon as possible. 1. Initialization SAT must be initialized, or it will not know where to do its drawing. There are two calls to do this: SATInit and SATCustomInit. SATInit sets up with a set of defaults that will work with many games. If you don't like it, consider SATCustomInit. Definition: procedure SATInit (pictID, bwpictID, Xsize, Ysize: integer); pictID is the resource number of a PICT that should be used as backdrop when running in color. bwpictID is the resource number of a backdrop PICT for b/w. Xsize is the desired height of the drawing area. Ysize is the desired width of the drawing area. Note: Unless you use Think Pascal, you must have initialized the Mac toolbox before initializing SAT. There is a call in SAT named SATInitToolbox for doing this in one line. Assignment 1: Create a new project. Add the SAT library and (for Pascal) the interface file SAT.p. Write a program file that initializes SAT with SATInit, then waits for a mouse click, and quits. Add that file to the project. Use a resource file with PICT resources for the backdrop. Possible problems: - Compile errors. Check the parameters used. Have you done "uses SAT"/"#include <SAT.h>? - Link errors. Have you included the SAT library in the project file? Pascal: Have you included SAT.p? - C: Can't find SAT.h. Make sure SAT.h is in the compiler's search path. For Think C, I recommend that you put both library and header file in a subfolder to where Think C itself is located. - Out of memory. Check the memory assignment. - The window is all black. Are the PICT numbers correct? Are the numbers for the drawing area correc…
