TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 1 The Program as a Teaching Tool 2 Supporting Educational Components 3 How the Program is Structured 4 What you Need to Run the Program and How to Start 9 Further Questions 9 Detective Notes 10 Definition Diner Terms 11 Web Link Instructions 19 INTRODUCTION Hydro One created this interactive CD-ROM adventure to assist the educator wishing to teach students about safety and respect for electricity. It is directed at grade levels 5 through 8. The program is structured to provide several teaching options. (Your choice will depend, at least in part, on the number of computers available.) • With guidance from the teacher, students can work through the program at individual work stations. • Students can work in small groups, each at its own computer work station. • Using just one computer station, you may prefer to run the program demonstration style, and have the class make collective safety decisions for each of the lessons. Whichever approach is taken, frequent class discussions are recommended, so students can pose additional questions, share understandings and explore how they will use what they have learned. If all students work on the same lessons, group discussion can follow the completion of each section. Included in the program is a take-home component that provides students with a quick checklist of the lessons they have completed. To generate these “Detective Notes” you will need a printer connected to your computer (the quality of the printout will depend on the type of printer you have.) WARNING THIS PROGRAM CONTAINS SCENES THAT MAY BE UPSETTING TO SOME. Note to teachers: In order to help students gain an appreciation of the seriousness of electrical hazards, several of the safety lessons in the program are explained with the aid of video footage showing a person receiving an electrical shock and its immediate effect. The lessons using such video footage are identified in a flow diagram found under “How the Program is Structured” in this Guide. 1 THE PROGRAM AS A TEACHING TOOL “The Wonders of Electricity... an adventure in safety” allows the teacher to take students on a series of first-person educational adventures. Cast as the hero of the story, the student, or the group, navigates through four locations in the town of Hazardville—the hydro substation, Power Park, Circuit Court and Millie Watt’s residence—to rectify twelve hazardous situations. Along the way, students discover new words and concepts, along with important information about how electricity works, and how to use it safely. Each safety challenge the student encounters is resolved through a series of activities that support visu…

Teacher’s Guide Quest for Water Safety: A Wizardly Adventure Interactive Water Safety Program Table of Contents Introduction 1 Program Outline 2 Program Structure 3 Quest Structure 4 Safety Lessons 5 Learning Activities 7 Running the Program 10 Internet Link Instructions 11 Introduction Quest for Water Safety: A Wizardly Adventure is an interactive, educational CD-ROM program. It has been created to help educators teach students about Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) hydroelectric generating facilities and the potential dangers surrounding them. Students will learn about the safety procedures people should follow near dams, hydraulic stations and their waterways, and are encouraged to inform their families about these procedures. The overall message of the program is that students should stay clear to stay safe. The program is intended for students in grades 4 and 5. The main elements of the program have been developed based on the Health and Physical Education: Healthy Living component of Ontario’s Elementary School Curriculum. It covers the curriculum expectations for Grade 4 of using living skills to address personal safety and injury prevention, and for Grade 5 of applying strategies to deal with threats to personal safety. Learning Objectives This program includes the following learning objectives: • To provide students in grades 4 and 5 with information about the safety threats around OPG’s dams and hydraulic plants. • Engage students in using their personal decision-making skills. • To give students the opportunity to understand how their decisions and actions can affect their personal safety. • To offer students an experiential activity that allows them to identify dangerous situations, make decisions and take actions to keep themselves safe. The program has been structured to offer teachers flexibility in how they can use it in the classroom. • Students can work through the program independently at individual computers. • Students can work through the program in small groups. • The program can be presented to the class using a single computer, with the students working as a group or in teams to respond to each lesson. In all cases, it is recommended that the CD-ROM exercises be combined with classroom discussions. This will help to ensure that students understand the material being presented, and will enable students to ask questions and further explore the implications of the material they have learned. 1 Program Outline Quest for Water Safety…

TransFuse Use TransFuse to move files between FUSION and your PC. Double-click on the TransFuse icon to get started. Two windows appear. One is the PC and the other is FUSION. The one that is active is the source, the other is the destination. To open a different volume in the window, select "Open Volume" (or press Command-O). To open the parent folder, double-click the ".." in the window (or press Command-,). To open a folder in the window, double-click the folder name. To open the root folder, select "Root Folder" (or press Command-/). To get information about the file, double-click the file (or press Command-I). To copy files, select them in the source window (using shift to select more than one file), then select "Copy" in the "Edit" menu (or press Command-C). The files will be copied to the current folder in the destination window. TransFuse will only copy the "data fork" of files, so be sure what you want to copy is in the data fork. TransFuse also does not set the file "type" or "creator," so you may need to do so yourself (using Mac Tools or something similar). It also does not copy folders, only files. To delete files, select them in the source window (using shift to select more than one file), then select "Delete" or "Clear" in the menu (or press Command-D). The files will be removed from the source window (and the drive). TransFuse only deletes files (not folders). TransFuse cannot undo a delete operation, so make sure you do not want the files you are about to delete. To select all the files in the source window select "Select All" (or press Command-A). 6/14/99 Mike Fenton To do (not yet implemented): "Rename" "New Folder" "Preferences" Pop-up menu (for a Ctrl-click on a file) Proper dialogs for copy situations. Smarter filename filtering for odd characters. Build a database for converting between PC types and Mac types/creators. Show progress for lengthy operations. Proper resource fork copy handling. Preserving original modification date on copies. More information in the list (date, size, and type). Copying and deleting folders, as well as files. Launch files after a double-click (instead of Get Info). Store window positions and sizes.
