Tangram History Tangram is a puzzle game that can be enjoyed by the entire family members. It does not require an inordinate amount of skill- just patience, time and, above all, imagination! There are hundreds of dissection puzzles-plane or solid figures cut into various pieces. Tangram is the most outstanding of all the dissection puzzles. Little is known for certain about the inventor or the origin of the Tangram. Even the origin of the name is obscure. According to Samuel Loyd, the American puzzle expert, the God Tan invented the puzzle 4,000 years ago and described it in the Seven Books of Tan. Each volume contained over 1,000 puzzles which were supposed to illustrate the creation of the world and the origin of species. The seven pieces were taken from the sun, the moon and the five planets of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Venus. His story later uncovered as a baseless elaborate and scholarly spoof. According to some, the name Tangram is a corruption of the obsolete English word trangam, which meant a puzzle or trinket. Other says it was derived from the Cantonese riverboat tanka girls who entertained American sailors. Other explains that the word was derived from the Tang Dynasty of China. One story tells that Tangram was invented by a man named Tan accidently while he tried to put broken pieces of a porcelain tile. In Asia, it is called 'Seven Plates of Wisdom'. The earliest known reference is a wood cut from 1780 by Utamaro. The earliest known book was published in 1813 in China. It seems certain that it is already old in 1813. One of Tangram-like puzzles first appeared in a book published in Japan in 1742. Scholars assume that Tangram began in Orient before 18th century and then spread westward. By 1818, Tangram publications had appeared in the Unite States, Germany, Italy, France and England. It swept through Europe and America at the beginning of 19th century and its popularity continues to this day. In 19th century China, it was so popular that the shape of the pieces found their way into the design of dishes, lacquer boxes and even tables. Toward the end of 19th century, a German industrialist began to produce stone versions of Tangram and other dissection puzzles under the name of 'The Anchor Puzzle'. The Anchor puzzles were so successful that over 30 new designs of puzzle sets were followed. During the World War I, its popularity reached to the highest level among the troops in the trenches of both sides. Thomas Edison and U. S. President Grover Cleveland publicly endorsed the puzzles in the puzzle booklets. There were many other famous fans of Tangram. During his exile in St. Helena, Napoleon found in the Tangram an absorbing interest. Literary men like Lewis Carroll and Edgar Allan Poe are known to have played the game extensively. Tangram has been loved by many as entertainment, educational and mathematical tools. It is said that Pythagorean theorem was discove…

Tangram 3.2 Read Me Tangram is an ancient Oriental toy which has 7 pieces, 5 triangles in different size, 1 square and 1 parallelogram. The objective of this game is to form a given shape using all 7 pieces. Thousands of shapes can be made by moving simple shaped pieces around. This puzzle game is specially great for children to practice matching skill. You may think this is only children's game, but you will find it challenging once you try it. Print option was added in version 3.17 or later. Inkjet printers work correctly in version 3.19. Snap on to the piece outline was added in version 3.2. You will recieve a diskette with the latest version, 2,400 puzzles and background picture files when you register. Registered version has lots of features including editor and thousands of puzzles. You can create, save and print your own puzzles. Now, you can pay shareware fee with your credit card, a wide variety of cash from different countries and checks in US Dollar. Tangram has the following pricing. Single user licenses, $20 per user. A Site License costs $200 (equal to 10 single users) and covers all computers in one site(e.g. computer lab). One big advantage of a Site License is that you do not need to keep track of how many people at your site are using the software. If registering for School Site Licenses and your school cannot afford to pay $200, please contact the author at sth@kagi.com for special rate. A World-Wide License costs $2000 and it covers all locations for your organization on the planet earth. Paying for Tangram is fairly simple. Open the Register program that accompanies Tangram. Enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user licenses you desire for each program you wish to purchase (or Site or Word-Wide licenses). Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to Kagi Shareware. More specifics on the Register program to follow. Kagi Shareware handles my payment processing. If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi Shareware. Their email address is shareware@kagi.com and their fax number is +1 510 652-6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. This may be inconvenient when you are working on slower machines. You can speed up this by adding a 'PICT' resource which contains all the miniature pictures to the puzzle…

Tangrams is a computerized version of a 200 or more year old Chinese tile puzzle. Tangrams is played by moving, turning and flipping the seven tiles to form one of hundreds of puzzle shapes. You can also create your own puzzles, print puzzles, answers, and patterns for tiles with Tangrams. Each single user license for Tangrams comes with the latest full feature version of Tangrams from Hacker Software. You will also receive a set of laser cut wooden Tangram puzzle pieces and a plastic two diskette box for the program diskette and puzzle storage. Full instructions are available within the Tangrams program. Tangrams has the following pricing. Single user licenses, $10 per user A Site License costs $50 and covers all schools within your school district or all locations for your organization within a 80 kilometer radius of your site (50 miles). One big advantage of a Site License is that you do not need to keep track of how many people at your site are using the software. Paying for Tangrams is fairly simple. Open the “Register ” program that accompanies Tangrams. Enter your name, your email address, your snail mail address and the number of single user licenses you desire for each program you wish to purchase (or Site or Word-Wide licenses). Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to Kagi. Kagi handles my payment processing. Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies, the conversion rate for non-USD checks is around USD 15 per check and that is just not practical. If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your accounts payable people. The QTVR Workbook: building better learning with immersive media 2 Introduction Prominent in current state and federal educa- tion reform initiatives, new technologies are gaining focus as instruments for revolution- izing learning. The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has devel- oped national educational technology stan- dards (ISTE, 1998)1 in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education, major univer- sities and large corporations. The standards recognize the role that multimedia plays in establishing technology-supported learning environments for the new millennium. These technologies appeal to multiple learning styles and offer students the ability to inter- act with instructional materials in a way pre- viously unimagined. Today’s multimedia ap- plications allow learners to simulate other- wise costly or dangerous experiences, con- duct experiments, visit remote locations, and model relationships, both real and abstract. These technologies also extend those experi- ences so that learning transcends school walls and the traditional instructional day. At the forefront of immersive media is QuickTime™ Virtual Reality (QTVR) pow- ered by Apple Computer, Inc.’s QuickTime multimedia architecture for MacOS™, Win- dows™, and UNIX. QTVR enables users to manipulate their views of environments and objects from any perspective. QTVR mov- ies can be distributed on the Internet, embed- ded in web pages, or on disk as part of self- contained multimedia presentations. To “visit” a South American archaeological dig or “hold” a Peruvian artifact requires a mouse rather than a plane ticket. QTVR’s affordability and ease of use makes it an ideal tool in the hands of both teachers and stu- dents for curriculum development and project enhancement. For those that aren’t ready for the inclusion of electronic media in their les- sons and projects, panorama software also enables one to create traditional panoramic images from a sequence of normal photo- 1 For ordering information visit http://www.iste.org Introduction 3 graphs.
