VNC Viewer for Macintosh Beta 2 7/6/99 Note. This is a beta release. As with all VNC software, you use at your own risk! Requirements: To use the Macintosh VNCviewer, you will need: MacOS 7.1 or greater, the Threads Manager, and Open Transport (1.1.1 or later) or MacTCP, though OT will work much better. Introduction: Use of the Mac viewer should be straightforward if you are familiar withthe concepts behind VNC, and have a suitable VNC server running on another machine. On starting the program, you are presented with a dialog box requesting the server name and display number. Type, eg. 'snoopy:0', or select a recent connection from the pulldown list. You can type a dotted IP address in place of the name, eg: '192.168.1.3:0'. Note the display number is NOT normally the TCP/IP port number. You can also pop up a list of options, the important ones are: Share desktop When you make a connection to a VNC server, all other existing connections are normally closed. This option requests that they be left open, allowing you to share the desktop with someone already using it. Allow only 8bit encoding This forces the viewer to request simple 8bit truecolour (BGR233) from the server regardless of local or remote pixel depth, which can reduce network traffic. Useful over modems. View only In Viewonly mode, no mouse or keyboard events will be sent back to the server. This is useful for teaching sessions or other situations where you want to observe but don't want to interfere. Scale desktop to window This scales the remote display to fit the local window. This is a bit rough at present, but may be useful in certain circumstances. If the connection is successful, you will be asked for your password, after which the remote desktop should appear. The File.. menu will allow you to start new sessions. The Connections menu lists open connections, along with icons representing their current status. See the 'Symbol Reference' option on the Apple menu for a description of these icons. Mouse Buttons (new for Beta 2) As the Mac mouse (usually) only has one button, some mechanism is needed to transmit left and middle combinations. Pressing command + n will toggle the use of button n. The current status of the button toggles is shown on the title bar of each connection. Initially the only toggle set is button 1. This means when the mouse is clicked a button 1 click event is sent. If you wanted to send a button 2 click you would turn off button 1 (via command + 1) then turn on button 2 (via command + 2) then click the mouse. To return to normal (button 1) use you'd need to untoggle button 2 (command + 2) and retoggle button 1. In this way all 8 combinations of 3 button superpositions can be sent. Admittedly this is a bit long winded if you only want to send a button 3 click (as you would for pasting in Unix) so command + 4 and command + 5 are set …

Using Games with Virtual PC Virtual PC contains a number of enhancements for playing PC games on your Mac, including DirectX game enhancement, and the ability to use 3Dfx graphics accelerator cards and joysticks. NOTE: All the Virtual PC drive images with Windows 95 and 98 contain the original 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics drivers pre-installed. If you have a Voodoo2 card, you must install the drivers; see instructions below. DirectX game enhancements Microsoft's DirectX technology is used in many popular Windows games. Virtual PC includes a custom video driver to improve performance in DirectX games. A fast PowerPC processor is required for DirectX games (G3 recommended.) 3Dfx graphics accelerator cards Virtual PC directly accesses 3D graphics accelerator cards that are based on the 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics or Voodoo2 chip set, such as TechWorks’ Power 3D card or Voodoo2 Game Wizard from Micro Conversions. The card must handle 3D graphics only; it cannot be a combined 2D/3D hardware card. You must have a Power PC-based Mac with PCI slots to use these cards. NOTE: If you install Windows 95 on a new drive image. you need to install the 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics or Voodoo2 drivers from the Extras drive image located on the Virtual PC CD-ROM. If you install Windows 98 on a new drive image, you need to install the Voodoo2 drivers from the Extras drive image located on the Virtual PC CD-ROM. If you install the Voodoo Graphics card, you do not need to install the drivers separately; Windows 98 detects the hardware and installs the correct drivers from the Windows 98 CD-ROM. Using Games with Virtual PC 1 Installing Voodoo2 drivers for Windows If you are using a Voodoo2 card (the second generation), you must install the drivers. NOTE: there are two versions of Voodoo cards currently in general use, Voodoo Graphics and Voodoo2. You cannot use both a Voodoo Graphics and a Voodoo2 card at the same time. If you install a Voodoo2 card, you must remove the original Voodoo Graphics card. To install the Voodoo2 drivers, first install the card, then do the following: 1. Launch Virtual PC while holding down the Option key (this brings up the Preferences dialog box). 2. In the Preferences, select Extras 95 or Extras 98 as the D drive. 3. Press the Restart button in the VPC Preferences. Windows automatically detects the new hardware (PCI Multimedia Device). A dialog box appears, asking What do you want Windows to do? 4. Click the radio button Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) and click Next. The dialog box prompts that Windows search for new drivers in its driver database. 5. Check the Specify a location check box. 6. Change the drive location by typing the following in the box: D:\Voodoo2 7. Click the Browse button. The dialog …

VST Charger 500 User Manual Update Oct. 31, 1994 The VST Charger 500 allows you three choices when charging the Apple intelligent batteries. In either one or both positions (simultaneously) you may: a)Charge the battery; b)Condition/Charge the battery; or c)Recalibrate/Condition/Charge the battery. Charging Charging is the fastest method of getting a topped off battery, and uses the previous calibration value stored in the battery’s EMM. Just insert one or two batteries into the charger, they will be fully charged in the shortest possible time. Conditioning Conditioning takes slightly longer than just charging, and is required occasionally to eliminate the memory effect. Conditioning simply discharges the battery to the End of Discharge (EOD) voltage recommended by Apple, then fully charges the battery. The most efficient way to condition a battery is to remove the empty or nearly empty battery from the PowerBook, and insert it into the Charger 500. Then, just press the condition button. The battery will be fully discharged to EOD, then fully charged. If a battery is inserted and the button is pressed, the red LED will turn on, and the yellow charge LED will go off. The charger will enter the discharge mode only if the battery is less than 25% charged. This design guideline is set to encourage batteries to be nearly exhausted before conditioning them, thus avoiding the waste of a full cycle of the battery’s useful life. The user may override this setting if the battery to be conditioned has more than 25% capacity by pressing the switch continuously for about three seconds. Note: the recalibration cycle, described below, includes a conditioning cycle. Recalibration Recalibration is recommended once every 25-30 cycles or once per month and includes a conditioning cycle. Recalibration takes longer to perform than just charging or conditioning alone since the battery must be fully charged, then depleted (during capacity measurement), then fully charged again. To recalibrate/condition/charge a battery, wait until the battery is fully charged and in the pulse-maintenance mode (all four green LEDs on and yellow LED flashing) then press and hold the button for three seconds — the red LED will stay on, indicating recalibration has started. Do not disturb the battery/charger during this period. The recalibration cycle for one battery takes about 4.5 hrs, for two batteries, about 8.0 hours. Recalibrating the battery once a month ensures the battery will learn its actual capacity which changes over time. In typical batteries, recalibration increases as much as 8 - 15% the available run time from each battery. -1-
