TAKE THEIR WORDS FOR IT! “When someone asks me what my computer can do, I show them an Infocom game.” Marion, 26, Research Technician Dayton, Ohio “Every Infocom game breaks new ground in the art of game design. Only in this case, it’s up to you to determine what happens next.” ROLLING STONE magazine “I’m not an avaricious person, gathering unto me great gobs of wealth does not make my soul stir, but the challenge of saving the world or rescuing a person is where it’s at.” David Lancaster, California “Your games are great! 6/25/24, 7:08 PM A/UX FAQ, updated for 21st century Semi-official FAQ list for A/UX This FAQ list is intended to cut down on the number of "often asked questions" that make the rounds on comp.unix.aux and to bring the official FAQ into the 21st century. Also included you'll find a few words of wisdom as well as some general information for the A/UX community. This list assumes that you are familiar with Unix (to some extent) but are curious about A/UX's peculiarities. If you don't understand something in the FAQ List, and a "Point of Contact" isn't specified, then by all means ask comp.unix.aux — the pool of A/UX experts is growing smaller, but this is still one of the best resources available. The list will be posted occasionally on comp.unix.aux, and maybe on news.answers and comp.answers as well. This FAQ will focus on A/UX 3.1.1, but will also refer to 3.1, 3.0.2 and 3.0.1. Bugs and things "broken" in 3.0.1 but fixed in 3.0.2 (and later) or "broken" in 3.1 but fixed in 3.1.1 won't necessarily be mentioned, since the 3.0.1→3.0.2 and 3.1→3.1.1 fixes (the AWS "Tune-Up" disks, v1.0 and v2.0) are free and readily available. Newcomers to A/UX (as well as the old-timers!) should become familiar with the sections on security, bugs, and hints before jumping to more specific questions. You can save yourself a few headaches! Please post your suggestions for additions/modifications to comp.unix.aux for consideration. Table of Contents List of Contributors to A/UX FAQ List General Q&A 1. What is A/UX? Is it any good? 9. This is the test version of Aask, the INIT selector. Do NOT rename Aask to something else, it is deliberately given this low name so that it will loaded before all others. To install, just put Aask.INIT in your system folder. Whenever you boot your Mac, Aask looks to see if the space bar is being held down. If not, Aask just lets you continue on your way without doing anything. If so, however, Aask will clear the screen and show you the icons of all files in the system folder that have INITs in them. Click on the icons of any files you want to disable. A black "X" will be drawn across the icon, signifying that it is disabled. Any files disabled will remain disabled until you tell Aask to enable them again. When are done enabling/disabling the files, click on the "OK" button. If you want to only temporarily turn INITs on or off, you can click on the "Temporary" button. Only those changes you've made this session will be temporary. You can tell which changes were made this session because an icon grays out when the change was made this session. Technical information: Aask finds all files of type INIT, RDEV, cdev, xNIT, xDEV, or xdev that have one or more INIT resources in them and have one or more ICN# resources in them. A file no longer needs ICN#s to show it. Aask disables a file by changing the first character of the file type into an "x", so that INITs become xNITs, RDEVs become xDEVs, and cdevs become xdevs. If a change is temporary, Aask puts a small piece of code in the system heap that will turn the files back by patching _InsertMenu. Aask will attempt to delete the small piece of code if possible. If another INIT has patched _InsertMenu, the data is discarded but the code must remain in the system heap.

About Abalone for the Macintosh 1.5.1 Description Abalone is a very nice stratetic board game for two or more players. If you don't know the rules, you can read about them in the About box. This program is a Macintosh implementation of the game Abalone. Each of the two or three Abalone players can be humans (local or remote on the network) or Macs, so you can use the program - in 'demo mode' (all Mac players), - to play against the Mac (one Mac player and one human player [you]), - to play against others, either using one Mac or using two or three networked Macs. Currently, four different but similar strategies can be chosen for a Mac player, and each strategy can be played at several different levels. More strategies may be implemented in the future; good ideas for this are welcome. If your idea sounds promising and is easy to implement, I may do so some day. Distribution Abalone for the Macintosh is freeware, but it is copyrighted by the author. The price for COMMERCIAL distribution is one free copy of the medium (floppy, CD-ROM, magazine, whatever) used to distribute Abalone, sent to my home address for free. All user feedback like postcards, bug reports, questions, dollar bills, comments etc. are welcome and can be sent at my home address, or at my mail address. You will find these addresses in the About box. Source code As of this version, the sources for Abalone are also made available (conditionally). They are distributed separately, as most users will not have much use for them. Having the sources will allow programmers to easily implement their own strategies and test them using my program. My copyrighted sources are made publicly availabe for this purpose only; it's explicitly forbidden to re-distribute a modified version of the program commercially (and this includes shareware), or with a changed About box. Requirements THIS PROGRAM REQUIRES SYSTEM 7. It definately won't run under earlier system software versions. The minimum size in the Finders Get Info box is enough to fully use the program, except for the 3D Graphics option, which makes the graphics a lot nicer. To use this option, the preferred size should be available to the program, and you also need to have QuickTime installed (to decompress the JPEG-ed PICTs). (De)Installation No special installation is needed; "just copy that floppy". When you quit this game, your settings are automatically saved in a Preferences file (in the Preferences Folder inside the System Folder, where these files belong). If you decide to trash Abalone, remember to remove the Abalone Preferences file. -1- If you don't like the background pictures provided, you can replace them with your own: create PICT resources, preferrably JPEG-medium compressed and with dimensions 494 * 430, and use them to replace the ones in Abalone with an ID in te range of 200…205. The SignWare -- Story from the originator Dr. Lou A. Honary January 1, 2020 The First Sign Language Software Developed in the United State I saw my first microcomputer, a Radio Shack TRS-80 computer in 1977 while at Mankato State University in Minnesota (now Minnesota State University, Mankato). Three years later I was programming on an Apple II computer for my doctoral dissertation project at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). The computers belonged to the Component Works division of John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa. The project required extensive data manipulation and involved a dozen floppy diskettes that were notched so data were recorded on both sides. Dealing with the limitations of a 48-kilobyte standard memory size on the Apple IIs taught me a lot about efficient use of memory space. It happened that my then girlfriend (and now wife of 40 years), Carol, was fluent in the American Sign Language. Before transferring to UNI, she had had a deaf roommate in community college; and had learned to sign. We had met at UNI and I often watched her practice her sign language. The thought occurred to me that if I take pictures of each letter of the alphabet, I could use an Apple Graphic Tablet and trace the images into the computer. It would then be easy to program so that when a letter key is pressed on the computer keyboard, the hand sign for that letter would show up. Easy, I thought. But after I loaded the first couple of line drawings of sign language letters into the memory of the Apple II, it ran out of memory. The digitized hand signs consumed too much memory space. Trying to read the signs off the floppy disk drive was too slow and time consuming. So, to conserve space, I had to come up with an idea to remove all the supplicate pieces of the hand shapes. For example, I reasoned that there is no need for the wrist, to appear 26 times if it is the same in the hand signs. Or the thumb may appear in the same position in 6 of the 26 letters of the alphabet's signs; it could be drawn once and recalled when needed in those signs. So, I re-took the pictures of the 26 letter hand signs in a way that there was minimal movement of the hand; and all the pictures were the same size and faced the camera. Figure 1 illustrates how the wrist is the same in the three letters of A, E, and N. The common areas of these three hand letter signs are circled in different colors: red illustrates the wrist and part of the palm that could be drawn once and used in all three hand signs; the blue lines show the middle finger in closed position drawn once and could be recalled for the letters A and N, and yellow indicates the side of the hand that could be the same for the letters E and N. Figure 1: Areas common to more than one picture were drawn once and used in other pictures With this trick and using about 120 line drawings of different hand parts (such as finger nails, wrists drawn in 3 different positions, knuckles, and lines representing creases in the hand…

OCR / Text contents
Introduction Mac Identifier 2.2 is a shareware control panel that puts back the model name and icon identification lost in the “About This Computer” (“About This Macintosh” under Mac OS 7.5) window under Mac OS versions 7.5 and later. It also brings back the model name to the flagship naming service on AppleTalk networks, allowing network administrators to know which Macintosh is which on their network. Installation To install Mac Identifier, drag its icon to the System Folder icon or place it directly into the Control Panels folder of the System Folder. Mac Identifier does not modify the system file. Therefore, when it is removed from the System folder and the Macintosh is rebooted, names and icons will be displayed as they were before it was installed. Should it be necessary to remove Mac Identifier, drag the extension to the trash. If Mac Identifier created a preferences file, it would named “Mac Identifier 2.1 Prefs” (or “Mac Identifier 2.0 Prefs if it had been created under Mac Identifier 2.0) and located in the Preferences folder inside the System Folder. Drag it also to the trash, then empty the trash. Reboot your machine and the system default will be restored. Details of Operation Mac Identifier is a true fat Mac Identifier contains a database of Apple Macintosh model designations and binary. It runs native on Power icons and alters system operation so that Macintosh applications can obtain Macintoshes when necessary. and provide this information, for example, when the Finder displays it in the “About This Computer” window and when the system software broadcasts it over an AppleTalk network (i.e., the flagship naming service). The database in Mac Identifier 2.2 contains the names and configurations of all Apple Macintoshes up through July 1997. The database does not contain the names of any clones, however. Mac Identifier identifies Macintoshes based on a value found in the Macintosh ROM called the gestaltMachineType. However, because there are many models of the Macintosh where the same value is used for similar, but not identical Macintosh models and sometimes even for dissimilar models, Mac Identifier …

TappyType is a Control Panel which causes your Macintosh to make typewriter noises in response to your keystrokes. It requires System 7 (or later), but runs on both the new Power Macs as well as the older machines. TappyType has a variety of features: • TappyType makes a “tap” noise in response to ordinary keys, a spacebar noise in response to Space or Tab, and scrolling noises in response to Page Up or Page Down. • In reponse to Return or Enter, TappyType makes a bell sound followed by a carriage return sound. There are some choices for the bell sound, including “off” if it becomes a nuisance. • TappyType can be turned on and off, either from the Control Panel dialog box, or at any time by invoking a special “toggle” keystroke. This keystroke can be configured in the Control Panel. • TappyType operates only when the foreground application is on a list of special applications that you choose via the Control Panel. You probably will want to hear typewriter noises only when you’re using a word processor or text editor, and not, for example, when you’re playing Tetris or Marathon. You can specify up to ten applications in which TappyType will make its noises. The TappyType distribution package consists of two files — this documentation that you’re now reading (“About TappyType”), and the Control Panel file (“TappyType”). To install TappyType, simply drag “TappyType” into the “Control Panels” folder inside your System folder, or drag it onto the icon of the System folder for the same effect. After you restart your Macintosh, TappyType will attempt to install itself, and will display one of the following icons near the bottom of your screen: Your Macintosh lacks capabilities that TappyType uses. Probably, your System version is older than 7.0. TappyType needed more memory than was available. The TappyType file has become corrupted, and TappyType cannot get resources that it needs. There were no problems. TappyType installed itself successfully. Although TappyType can be turned on or off, it cannot be purged from memory once it is installed during startup. To remove TappyType, move it outside your System folder and restart, or hold down the Shift key during startup to temporarily disable all Control Panels and Extensions. You can also use Apple’s Extensions Manager (or its third- party cousins) to disable any combination of extensions you choose. About TappyType Introduction Page 1 That’s all there is to this introduction. Consult the other chapters for details about usage, history, etc. Happy tapping...
