 Welcome to the September 2001 Developer Tools CD! Contents Introduction Compatibility with Earlier Mac OS X Versions Compatibility of Built Applications Installing the Mac OS X Developer Tools Installing WebObjects Developer with the Mac OS X Developer Tools Installing the CarbonLib SDK Possible Installation Problems and Workarounds Introduction The September 2001 Developer Tools CD includes everything you need to begin developing applications for Mac OS X, including tools, documentation, and software. In addition, it includes the latest CarbonLib SDK for Mac OS 8 and 9. For the latest information and updates to Mac OS X development tools, documentation, code samples, and technical notes, please visit http://developer.apple.com/macosx. Developers are encourages to join the Apple Developer Connection which provides the most convenient access to Mac OS X development resources, including technical support and pre-release software. For information, visit http://www.apple.com/developer. Please read the separate What’s New document for information on what has changed on this CD. Compatibility with Earlier Mac OS X Versions The September 2001 Developer Tools CD is primarily intended for use on systems running Mac OS X 10.1. Earlier versions of the Developer Tools CD should not be installed or used with Mac OS X 10.1 (for example, the older linker does not work with two-level namespace binaries). If you are running earlier versions of Mac OS X, we strongly encourage you to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.1 and the September 2001 Developer Tools so you can take full advantage of new features of the tools, including two-level namespace. Two- level namespace is a new linker feature (similar to that on Mac OS 9) that provides faster launch times for your applications and more robustness by ensuring that at launch time your application dynamically links with symbols from the correct libraries. It will help ensure greater compatibility on future versions of Mac OS X as Apple adds new APIs to the system frameworks. Two-level namespace is the default behavior of the linker. Do not install the complete September 2001 Developer.mpkg package on systems earlier than Mac OS X 10.1. The only sub-package which may be useful is the Developer Tools package itself. If you want to install that (via Custom Install), update to at least Mac OS X 10.0.4 before doing so. When using the new tools (which default to two-level namespace) on a Mac OS X 10.0.4 system, you will need to add /usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib as a library (and possibly other frameworks) to properly link Cocoa applications. That is not necessary on Mac OS X 10.1. Do not upgrade from the May 2001 Developer Tools package to the September 2001 Developer Tools unless you are running at least Mac OS X 10.0.4. On systems earlier than 10.0.4, there was an Installer bug that would prevent you from launching any applications after that tools upgrade, due to over-aggressive deletion of a non-empty directory. In Project Bu…

About BBEdit Lite.txt About BBEdit Lite ----- ------ ---- BBEdit Lite is a freeware derivative of BBEdit 3.0, the popular and critically acclaimed text editor for programmers, on-line-service users, and anyone else who needs to edit plain-text files. BBEdit Lite is shipped with a QuickStart document which describes many of the applicationİs features. Full documentation, as well as a considerable amount of additional functionality, is available with the purchase of BBEdit 3.0. See the document ŇBBEdit General InformationÓ for details on obtaining BBEdit 3.0. Feature Overview ------- -------- BBEdit Lite offers the following useful functionality: Ą Stationery documents. You can create a stationery document with BBEdit; whenever you open that document with BBEdit, its contents, format information, and window position will be used to create a new untitled window. You can also create a ŇglobalÓ stationery document which will be used as a template for all new windows. Ą Open Several. This variation on the standard ŇOpenÉÓ command enables you to open multiple files at once from multiple locations in the file system. You can also specify aliases to files, and those aliases will be resolved all at once. Ą Powerful multi-file search. BBEdit offers the usual multi-file search, in which a disk directory is scanned and the files are opened one at a time; however, BBEdit can also display the search results in a window for easy browsing (and selected entries in the window can be opened for display). The search can also be limited to files that are already opened for editing in BBEdit, or to files which were already found in a previous multi-file search. BBEdit also offers multi-file replace capability for automated Ňsearch and destroyÓ operations. Ą Zero cost. BBEdit Lite is free, with no qualification. Itİs not shareware, and itİs not commercial. Itİs not crippled, nor is it a demo. BBEdit Lite also offers the following : Ą High quality. BBEdit Lite is based on mature and stable technology; this technology is the benificiary of years of in-house and field use and testing. The commitment to quality and functionality shown in BBEdit 3.0 is reflected in BBEdit Lite. Ą File size limited only by available memory. BBEdit Liteİs default partition size is 640K of RAM. This can be set as low as 450K, to make BBEdit Lite the ideal constantly-resident editor for small to moderate tasks, or turned up as high as necessary to edit many large files or perform large-scale search-and-replace operations. If youİre running under System 7.0, BBEdit Lite automatically takes advantage of available system memory, so that you donİt have to adjust its partition size to edit large files. Ą No hard limit on number of files open. The number of files that BBEdit Lite can have open at once is limited by available memory, and can be increased or decreased by adjusting BBEdit Liteİs partition size as appropriate. Ą …

Using Blake™ A Cyberdog replacement browser. Version: Technical Release 2 Requires OpenDoc 1.2.1 and Cyberdog 2.0. Getting started: 0) Understand the Blake is a Technical Release and as such, it will crash your computer. It is a technical demonstration and it is not ready for prime time. Don't work on anything important while using this software. You have been warned. 1) Install and check the operation of OpenDoc 1.2.1 and Cyberdog 2.0. http://opendoc.apple.com/ and http://cyberdog.apple.com/ 2) You need to download and install Microsoft Outlook Express 4.0c (or later) for Blake Technical Release 2. Since we have not finalized licensing for IEControl for re-distribution, this is an indirect way of getting the correct libraries needed for Blake installed on your computer without us getting sued! Its big (>4MB) - sorry. Download and install it. All we need is the stuff that goes into the System Folder; you can delete the Outlook Express application folder if you want - just don't delete the files it installs in the System Folder. http://www.microsoft.com/mac/ie/macoe.htm 3) Run the Blake installer scriptlet. It will put the file Blake into the Cyberdog Libraries folder which it assumes is in the Editors folder of the System Folder. 4) MAKE SURE you delete the file 'Kantara Window Sizer' in the Cyberdog Libraries folder, if it exists. This is new from version TR1. 4) Make sure Cyberdog's memory partition is not larger than 2500K. 5) Start up Cyberdog. Go to a web page. Have Fun. 6) Note: Web sites will count you as both Cyberdog and Internet Explorer. 7) Run Register program and pay the shareware fee. :^) 8) Click on the Register Blake banner above the web pages, and enter the registration code once you get it. You will no longer see it the banner. Changes Since TR1: 1) You no longer have to visit Editor Setup to have Blake be used for viewing HTML. There is now a menu item in the cyberdog menu that lets you turn Blake on or off for future URLs. 2) Kantara Window Sizer is integrated into Blake, and has bug fixes. -1- 3) Lots of other things - take a look and see. Known problems: 1) May crash sometimes! When it does, it will likely bring down your whole computer and erase any unsaved work. Don't use this on a production machine. 2) Using secure sites will likely not work as expected. Don't use Blake for serious work at this point. 3) Using frame based pages will likely not work as expected. We are waiting for Microsoft to fix this bug in a future version of Outlook Express. 4) It is not streaming correctly (pukes somewhat on FTP - it asks for the password multiple times). 5) No preference settings yet! 6) Death when trying to split a web page into multiple facets (across page boundaries in WAV, etc.) This may never get fixed. Don't try embedding Blake in other documents! 7) JavaScript doesn't work. We are waiting for Microsoft for resolution on this matter and a new…

About ClickCopy X ClickCopy X is a Finder contextual menu plugin designed for Mac OS® X that enables the user to copy files, make aliases, and move files easily. Normally under the Finder, if you want to copy a file from one folder to another, you need to have both folder windows open and drag-and-drop the file from the source folder to the destination folder. Even with Mac OS X's built-in method, the Copy and Paste commands in Finder's contextual menu only provide limited options. With ClickCopy X installed in your system, you can copy the file from the source folder and paste the file anywhere without the source folder being open. Once a file is copied with ClickCopy X's contextual menu, you can paste, make alias, or move the file to a different location. In addition to paste, make alias, or move the group of files, you can work with individual or selected files. ClickCopy X provides its own internal buffer for the copied file objects, it can also get the file objects from the Finder's Clipboard. ClickCopy X can be configured with custom menu item text to support your favorite menu item names and languages, and you can elect to enable selected menu items. The copy and paste commands in the context menus have been available for Microsoft® Windows® systems for quite a while, and DragonOne created the original ClickCopy for Mac OS 9 to provide the similar functionality for Mac users. With ClickCopy X for Mac OS X, DragonOne has done it again to extend the support of this important file operation feature to all Mac OS X users. ClickCopy X is very simple to use, you access its functionalities just like any other commands in Finder's contextual menu. To access ClickCopy X's menu commands, simply control + click (or right click with a two-button mouse) on the Finder to bring up Finder's contextual menu. The “ClickCopy X” sub menu will be listed under Finder's built-in menu items. System requirements ClickCopy X 1.0 requires a Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, G5, or Intel Core processor, at least 10MB of RAM, 3MB of hard disk space, Mac OS X version 10.3 or later, including 10.5 Leopard. Installing ClickCopy X 1.0 Double-click the ClickCopy X 1.0 installer and follow the onscreen instructions. For more information Using ClickCopy X: Open ClickCopy X and click the Help button (with a question mark). Copyright Copyright © 1999-2008 Jerry Du, DragonOne. All Rights Reserved. Dark Side of the Mac version 2.5 © copyright 1989, 1990, 1991 all rights reserved by Tom Dowdy Introduction DarkSide is a screen saver application for Macintosh computers that run MultiFinder. It runs in the background and has an expandable set of “blackouts” or “Faders” which you can select from. Special note to users of old versions (before 2.1) Please take a look at the release notes for this version, as well any any new faders you haven't looked at before. You never know when you'll find a “new” one that you'll like better than your old ones. In addition, 2.1 introduces some changes in the shell, so faders in this version will not work with older versions of DarkSide - be sure to upgrade DarkSide along with your faders! Old faders, however, should work just fine with the new DarkSide if you have written any of your own. Setting up DarkSide… I usually set DarkSide up as one of my Startup applications (via the SetStartup command for users of 6.0.x). You can also simply run the program. Once DarkSide is running, you should select a screen fader that you would like to use. Use the “Choose Fader…” menu item to do this. (You can also double-click on a Fader from the Finder to select it, either before or after running DarkSide) You can control the options with the “DarkSide Settings…” menu item. Most faders also have their own settings to allow you to customize them. This is found in the “Fader Settings…” menu item. That's all there is to it. All settings within DarkSide and the faders are saved between runs of the program – so you should only need to set up DarkSide once. Fading right away A quick way to take a look at all of the faders is to double click on one of them and then command-F (Fade Now) to glance at it, then move on and double click on the next one. Note that there is a 2 second delay from when you move the mouse into the Fade Now corner and when the fade occurs. This is on purpose to avoid conflicts with INITs such as OnCue. Random fading You can set DarkSide to randomly choose between faders within the same folder as your selected fader. Do this by choosing “Randomly choose a fader” from within the DarkSide Settings dialog. Note that this will only take effect when you say “Fade Now…” or use the fade now corner, and not if you just let DarkSide fade automatically. This is due to a limitation in 6.0.x MultiFinder – I chose to place this limit rather than not implement the feature at all. Special note to users of System 7 The easiest way to make DarkSide run every time you turn on your Mac is to make an alias of the application and place it into your Startup Items folder in your System Folder. A future version of DarkSide will likely be 7.0 dependant, while providing lots of neat features for users of 7.0. Coming back from a fadeout… You can bring you Mac back …

 About Mac OS X Developer Tools Compatibility and Installation December 2002 Release for Mac OS X version 10.2 Contents Introduction Compatibility of the Tools with Mac OS X Versions Compatibility of Built Binaries Use of the Developer Tools with WebObjects Developer Installing the Mac OS X Developer Tools Installing the Older ProjectBuilderWO IDE (DevPBWO.pkg) Possible Installation Problems and Workarounds Introduction The Mac OS X Developer Tools includes everything you need to write software for Mac OS X, including the programming tools, system API documentation, and Mac OS X interfaces, libraries and example source code. For the latest information and updates to Mac OS X Developer Tools, documentation, code samples, and technical notes, please visit the Apple Developer Connection’s Mac OS X pages, starting at http://developer.apple.com/macosx. We encourage developers to join the Apple Developer Connection which provides the most convenient access to Mac OS X development resources, including technical support and pre-release software. For information, visit http://www.apple.com/developer. Please read the separate “What’s New” document for information on what has changed since the July 2002 Developer Tools release. Compatibility of the Tools with Mac OS X Versions The December 2002 release of the Developer Tools is intended for use only on systems running the Mac OS X version 10.2 operating system or later, and vice versa. It has been tested on the Mac OS X versions 10.2, 10.2.1, 10.2.2 and 10.2.3, at the time of this writing. For development on Mac OS X v10.1 to v10.1.5, use the April 2002 Mac OS X Developer Tools release. Compatibility of Built Binaries With the December 2002 Developer Tools release, you can build two-level namespace binaries which run on Mac OS X 10.1 and later. Those two-level namespace binaries will also run on systems earlier than Mac OS X 10.1, provided that: - those binaries do not require new APIs which did not exist on earlier systems. Instead, at runtime you can check for the existence of APIs and dynamically load the necessary symbols if you are running on a system where they are available. - those binaries do not reference symbols of the same name from more than one shared library (or your application). While systems earlier than Mac OS X 10.1 can run two-level namespace binaries, those systems cannot properly resolve multiple symbols of the same name. The gcc compiler’s ABI (Application Binary Interface) for C++ programs has been changing as the compiler’s support for the full C++ language has become more complete. As a result of these changes, C++ code that is bound together must be created by the same version of the compiler in order to be guaranteed to work. Consequently, it is a bad idea to create libraries with C++ interfaces that are built (or distributed) independently of the code that uses those libraries. Speci…

The sequel to Hordes of Orcs brings: • An overhauled user interface. • A new Railgun tower for wiping out more Orcs in record time. • New, Undead enemies. If they aren't alive, how can you hurt 'em?! • Improved, colorful and fun graphics! • Better performance to get the most of your Hordes of Orcs experience. To kill the Orcs, buy some Towers. Arrow Towers are cheap and weak, Radiation towers are expensive and deadly. Each Tower has its own unique abilities, and each tower can be upgraded to do more damage or to have more range. Click on a tower to see its stats and upgrade cost. Should you build lots of Arrow Towers? Or a few Fire Towers? Well, that's where the strategy comes in! Each time you kill an Orc you'll get some cash... (like pinatas, Orcs are full of candy and money as everybody knows). Remember, certain Orcs are resistant to certain Towers, (Fire can't hurt the Orcs in Red for example), so a combination of Towers is your best bet. Clicking on a marching Orc will show you that Orc's health and special properties. Don't forget your Spells! You have four spells from which to choose: Teleport: Sends the selected Orcs back to the starting Portal. Fog: Slows all the Orcs down for a short while, giving your Towers more time to knock the candy out of them. Bait: Creates an irresistible Orcish gift-basket of shitake mushrooms, moose dung, and the blood of innocents. They'll forget your village and head right for it. Weaken: Makes the selected Orcs more vulnerable to all of your Towers. You can only cast a Spell if you have enough Mana. So keep an eye on your Mana stat, and save it for emergencies! Hordes of Orcs has five different game variations, so once you've mastered Open Warfare, you can try to stop the Orcs from making off with your treasure in Capture the Flag or stick to the path in Maze Defense. Click the "Zoom" button if you've built all your Towers and you're just watching the carnage.
