***** ReadMe Document for GM GameConverter v1.51 ***** GM GameConverter v1.51 reads documents that were created with versions of GameMaker from v0.95 - v1.33 and creates a new document using GameMaker v1.5 format. The new file will have the same name as the old one except that ".CNVRT" will be added to the end of the name. If a document with that name already exists (which may mean you already converted it), a dialog box will appear asking you to select another name. The old file will not be deleted so you can still use the old file with older versions of GameMaker. RECENT CHANGES TO GM GAMECONVERTER - v1.51 fixes a bug in v1.5 that was not saving some animation and sounds to the new file. -1-

Welcome to the CORE WARS system for the Macintosh! Core Wars is the Ultimate game for HACKERS. It was designed by A. K. Dewdney, and described in his "Computer Recreations" collumns which appeared in the May '84 abd March '85 issues of Scientific American. In Core Wars two programs battle for control of the imaginary MARS computer. The programs are written by the players in an "assembly language" called REDCODE. The players edit, assemble, and run their programs all within the Core Wars system. The programs may be stored on disk, and loaded later to fight other players' programs. During battle, the players can see all 8000 cells of the memory in the MARS computer. The dynamics of the battle can be viewed, or the battle can be stopped, so that memory may be examined in detail. There is no end to the interesting battle programs that can be written. Some of them are described in this manual. Others in the articles mentioned above. You may create others. Chapter I Commands When you load the Core Wars program by double clicking on its ICON, you will be entertained with a little rendition for whom the credit must obviously go to George Lucas. You may terminate this performance any time after the text begins to scroll by simply clicking the mouse. Core Wars starts out with an empty screen and the menu bar. There are the 3 familiar menu items: apple, FILE, and EDIT, and a fourth unfamiliar one named WAR. It is with these menus that all of the Core Wars functions are invoked. The File Menu As always, the File menu contains the commands which manipulate the files which are input to the system, and output from the system. The quit command also resides here. The user who is familiar with the Macintosh should find no surprises in the structure of this menu. The commands all have there most obvious meaning. The Edit Menu Once again, the user should find no surprises here, except for the fact that the UNDO command is not implemented. (So don't make any mistakes). The clipboard is managed as usual and should be transferrable into other programs as a TEXT item. The War Menu Here is where the new stuff starts. The War menu contains the commands which control the battle of the programs within the MARS computer. Load Soldier: Implies that an edit window is open with a complete REDCODE program in it. The program is assembled and prepared for loading into the memory of the MARS system. When assembly is complete, a dialog box appears which allows the user to set the absolute load address of his program, and whether the program he is loading will be playing as WHITE, BLACK or neutral. Neutral is good for loading data structures which are accessories to programs. Clear Battlefield: Erases the memory of the MARS computer. All programs wh…

Core! Manual version 1.1 1 Core! A Redcode development system for the Macintosh Release Version 1.1 14 September 1991 by Jon Newman jonn@microsoft.com with help from Robert Martin and Paul DuBois Introduction This document describes Core!, a Core War simulator application for the Macintosh computer. It should run on any Macintosh with 512K RAM or more. Later versions may support sound, hierarchical menus, and other extensions which may require recent versions of the System or ROMs. Core! is fully MultiFinder compatible and is System 7 friendly. Core! is a SIMULATOR; it is entirely different from the old Core War programs from the early days of the Macintosh or from mainframe hacking. It is not necessary to disconnect your hard drive to run Core!! Core! is no more (or less) dangerous than other Macintosh applications. Distribution Information ShareWare fees: Just Registration: US$14; Registration Plus Latest Update: US$17, or US$14 plus stamped self-addressed disk mailer with 800K disk; payable in check or money order to: Jon Newman 1809 Imperial Ridge Las Cruces, NM 88001 USA (PLEASE NOTE: Core! is my own personal product, and is not in any way associated with Microsoft Corp. or its legal department. This is just my best SnailMail address…) About ShareWare: Core! is a ShareWare product. For those unfamiliar with ShareWare, this means that the product is distributed freely throughout the Macintosh community, except that commercial distribution is prohibited. After a trial period using Core!, you are honor-bound to either send in the registration fee or erase Core! from your software collection. Feel free to give Core! to your friends! but be sure to tell them that Core! is not free, and that if they like and use Core! they too must send in their personal registration fee. If you have questions, contact me at the address above, or at jonn@microsoft.com. Using This Documentation Core! consists of: This document " Core! manual" for MacWrite 5.0 The document "MARS Standard" for MacWrite 5.0 The application " Core!" An assortment of fighter programs READ.ME (of course!) If you already understand Core War, read the MENUS and WINDOWS sections to learn how to use this particular simulator. If you are unfamiliar with Core War, skip ahead to GENERAL INFORMATION and come back to MENUS and WINDOWS later. If you have questions about Core War syntax, program behavior, or the Core War extensions implemented in Core!, check the MARS Standard document. Core! Manual version 1.1 2 MENUS The File Menu New Fighter: Creates an empty new Edit window. This window can be used to edit, load and save MARS fighter programs. The editor is a standard multi-window TextEdit-based editor. Open Fighter: Loads a file into a new Edit window. Close Fighter: Closes the fro…

Bernard of Hollywood's Marilyn by Corel ==================================== Congratulations on your purchase of this product in the Corel CD Home series. This text addresses a few technical issues you should be aware of: If you experience problems in the playback of the videos in the Marilyn title, you may be running the program using a single-speed CD-ROM drive. We recommend using a double-speed CD-ROM drive for this title, as any video output this size will be sluggish using a single-speed drive. If you find the overall performance of the program slow, you can improve its playback by disabling virtual memory in your control panels. If you experience a lack of sound when playing the journal entries, you may have more than one SCSI manager installed on your system. Please ensure that only one company's SCSI management extensions are included in your system folder. Using the Corel ArtView Screen Saver ================================== Congratulations on your purchase of this Corel CD Home Series title. The following text explains how to install the Corel Artview! screen saver onto your Macintosh. Installation ----------- The Mac Artview folder contains the Corel Artview! screen saver program as well as a pre-defined preferences file added for your convenience. In order to install the screen saver, simply drag the Corel Artview! icon to your 'System Folder:Startup Items' folder. To pre-configure the screen saver, drag the Corel Artview! Preferences icon to your 'System Folder:Preferences' folder. Your screen saver will now be active when your Macintosh restarts. Preferences ----------- Using the preferences file you copied to your hard drive, the screen saver will access the Bernard of Hollywood's Marilyn CD ROM when activated and display a variety of images of Marilyn. These images will be shown for three seconds each. The screen saver will activate after the system has been idle for five minutes. Sleep and Wake Corners --------------------- The lower-left corner of your screen will be used as a sleep corner, allowing you to activate the screen saver before the specified time limit. The lower-right corner of your screen will be used as a wake corner, preventing the screen saver from being activated at the specified time limit. Custom Preferences ------------------ You can modify the preferences any time you like by going to the Options menu and selecting Set Preferences. Here you can modify the sleep time as well as disable the sleep and wake corners. You can also select Configure from the Options menu to modify the minimum image size viewed, view time, and the default folder that Artview will search for images. (The Artview screen saver can display Kodak PhotoCD and PICT images.)
