Dark Side of the Mac version 2.5 © copyright 1989, 1990, 1991 all rights reserved by Tom Dowdy Introduction DarkSide is a screen saver application for Macintosh computers that run MultiFinder. It runs in the background and has an expandable set of “blackouts” or “Faders” which you can select from. Special note to users of old versions (before 2.1) Please take a look at the release notes for this version, as well any any new faders you haven't looked at before. You never know when you'll find a “new” one that you'll like better than your old ones. In addition, 2.1 introduces some changes in the shell, so faders in this version will not work with older versions of DarkSide - be sure to upgrade DarkSide along with your faders! Old faders, however, should work just fine with the new DarkSide if you have written any of your own. Setting up DarkSide… I usually set DarkSide up as one of my Startup applications (via the SetStartup command for users of 6.0.x). You can also simply run the program. Once DarkSide is running, you should select a screen fader that you would like to use. Use the “Choose Fader…” menu item to do this. (You can also double-click on a Fader from the Finder to select it, either before or after running DarkSide) You can control the options with the “DarkSide Settings…” menu item. Most faders also have their own settings to allow you to customize them. This is found in the “Fader Settings…” menu item. That's all there is to it. All settings within DarkSide and the faders are saved between runs of the program – so you should only need to set up DarkSide once. Fading right away A quick way to take a look at all of the faders is to double click on one of them and then command-F (Fade Now) to glance at it, then move on and double click on the next one. Note that there is a 2 second delay from when you move the mouse into the Fade Now corner and when the fade occurs. This is on purpose to avoid conflicts with INITs such as OnCue. Random fading You can set DarkSide to randomly choose between faders within the same folder as your selected fader. Do this by choosing “Randomly choose a fader” from within the DarkSide Settings dialog. Note that this will only take effect when you say “Fade Now…” or use the fade now corner, and not if you just let DarkSide fade automatically. This is due to a limitation in 6.0.x MultiFinder – I chose to place this limit rather than not implement the feature at all. Special note to users of System 7 The easiest way to make DarkSide run every time you turn on your Mac is to make an alias of the application and place it into your Startup Items folder in your System Folder. A future version of DarkSide will likely be 7.0 dependant, while providing lots of neat features for users of 7.0. Coming back from a fadeout… You can bring you Mac back …

What is DarkSide? DarkSide is an application that serves as a "screen saver." Screen savers are used to keep you Macintosh screen from "burning in" or having one image permanently etched into the phosphors of your screen. DarkSide works by presenting a series of moving images on the screen and there are many to choose from which keeps any one image from damaging your Macintosh screen. Some screen savers are System Extensions. They work by modifying your Macintosh computer's operating system as such they are often prone to breaking with new releases of system software. They also can have bad effects on your applications. DarkSide is just an application. It does all of its work the way normal Macintosh applications do. Because of this, it should not interfere with other applications on your Macintosh. What do I need to run DarkSide? In order to run DarkSide of the Mac 5.0, you must have a Macintosh computer with System 7.0 or greater installed. DarkSide works on all Macintosh computers, and has been tested by a large group of testers to get rid of as many bugs as possible. It probably isn't perfect but few things are. How do I install DarkSide? DarkSide is simple to install. Drag the DarkSide folder to wherever you like on your hard disk. DarkSide can be located anywhere. Automatically starting DarkSide Since it is most useful to have DarkSide start up when you turn on your Macintosh, you may wish to create an alias to the application and…

Darkseed © 1992 Cyberdreams Manual On the screen, you will see an arrow-shaped cursor that you control. When your cursor is over a connecting doorway which leads to another room or location, this single arrow cursor changes to four inwardly-pointing arrows. To make Mike Dawson move, position the arrow cursor wherever you want him to go and press the left mouse button. Mike will walk to this new position. If there is an unavoidable obstruction in his path, he will stop at the closest possible point. If you press the left mouse button when the multiple arrows are displayed, Mike will walk to the doorway. The game will pause while the new location is loaded from disk, and an hourglass cursor will be displayed. Clicking the right mouse button cycles the cursor shape through a "?" (look/inquire) shape, a "hand" (touch/manipulate) shape, and the "arrow" (move) cursor shape. When the "?" and "hand" cursors are placed over items which have more information available, or which Mike can pick up or use, the cursor changes shape. The "?" shape changes to an "!", and the "open hand" shape changes to a "pointing finger". To examine or manipulate an object, select a "?" or "hand" icon using the right mouse button, place it over the desired object, and press the left mouse button to activate it. If you use the "hand" icon to pick up an object, it is added to your inventory. Regardless of the input device you chose (keyboard, joystick or mouse), the "T" key can be used during the game to advance the clock to the beginning of the next hour; this is useful if you find yourself stuck in a situation with a lot of time to kill. Also, you may skip past the introduction at the start of the game by pressing the space bar. Hint: make sure you 1QQk at everything in each room. YOUR INVENTORY To view your current inventory, move the cursor to the top of the screen. A row of icons will appear at the top of the game window. The first icon, a floppy disk, is used for setting game options (see GAME OPTIONS). The second icon is the money icon, useful (and necessary) if you want to take Mike Dawson shopping. Other inventory item icons will appear as you accumulate them. To examine an item in your inventory, place the "?" cursor over the inventory item and press the left mouse button. To manipulate something in your inventory, use the "hand" cursor. To use an inventory item, select it using the arrow cursor and the left mouse button. The cursor will immediately change to the "hand" shape to indicate that you are holding an inventory item. You may then place the "hand" cursor over any object or position on the screen, and press the left mouse button to use the item. To de- select an inventory item after you have selected it, press the right mouse button. This item remains in your inventory. If you have more items in your inventory than will fit at the top of the display screen, scrolling arrow icons will appear next to your inventory icons. Selecting these arrows allows you to …

The Story Darkwood is a moderately sized city in the northern regions. The city has no walls or obvious defenses, but is one of the safest cities on the realms thanks to a powerful City Guard. Those enlisting in the City Guard must prove themselves before being admitted. Some seek adventure in the neighboring lands or seek out some lost treasure. The most popular by far however is the arena located in town. In the arena, anyone can pit their skill against a selected foe and earn gold and fortune in doing so. This is where you come in. Your name is Derek, and until now your only claim to fame is picking pebbles from horseshoes at the local stables. Your mother recently passed away and your father was killed 2 seasons ago defending the town against an Orc invasion. You have been working the streets ever since, trying to make a living. You realize that you can not go on in this fashion. You must make something of yourself. You must sign on at the arena and earn place in the City Guard. The city has had a long standing agreement that anyone besting the most powerful creature the arena could host, would be signed on as one of the Captain of the Guards.
