Bernhard E. BOrdek The Apple Macintosh Many objects are beautiful; many are useful. But only very few ever enter into history: Design Classics eu/t o(tt M~e!Jtto6'/t j Copyright @ 1995, 1996 I The Cult Team, cult-adm@utu.fi Coauthored by Chris Stone, stone@gulf.net @ MacSense • Pt;INT Latest links on August 30th. will happen. With this in mind, Apple continues to be a catalyst for improving the way people use technology to work, learn, and communicate." And if something turns into a cult-object, then naturally the appropriate environment develops: diverse magazines are dedicated exclusively to the Mac, its accessories, and software. Independent fairs are held (the MacWorld) and the product itself has its counterpart in Cyberspace: http://cult-of-mac.utu.fi/- that's the URL (the Internet address) where fans can download information to their own computer from a rich and comprehensive Mac-archive. The Mac, its software and different accessories have their own trade About two hundred addresses exist, offering information of fair, MacWorld. On the Internet, all kinds about APPLE and the Mac. the community of Mac fans can surf through the Mac's archives. No matter how light-heartedly one may speak of a "change in paradigm" in history, the Mac certainly caused such a transformation - from the rule of computer scientists to the use of computers by amateurs. This was a truly revo- lutionary act: the democratization of the electronic data processing by the turn of the 20th century. There is something else: similar to the Walkman9, which made the collective musical experience mobile and indivi- dual, the Mac is the symbol for how computer performance that had for the most part been centralized, was now decentralized and thus made available on the individual user's desk. 26 ware and software. Here are some notes on how to increase the utilization of Desk Accessories while using the "Switcher". Thanks to Maug and other sources, I have collected quite a few Desk Accessories (hereafter called "DA's"). However, because of the limitation of the pull-down menus, you can only get 18 DA's to show at any one time. This note describes how to obtain more DA's for your use while using the Switcher. It is not commonly known that you may include DA's (and fonts) as resources in Applications such as MacWrite or MacPaint. The trick in increasing the number of DA's is to place logically useable DA's in applications. For example, you may want to include a word counter DA in MacWrite or the Art Thief (paint grabber) DA in MacPaint. Likewise, you may want to include a autodialer DA in your favorite Communications application. You group these DA's so they are grouped logically for a particular application. DA's which you want to use in all applications would be placed in the System as normal. So, if you have 12 general DA's in the System, that leaves you 6 you can place in "each" application. As you switch around using Switcher, each set of DA's will pop up depending on which application you are using. You can also place DA's in the Finder, so that when the Finder is in view, you can have 6 additional DA's there too. The same goes for the Switcher application. So, how do you do all this magic? There are a few preliminary pieces of information you must have. Normally, you could use REDIT to merely copy and paste DA's from a System file to an application. BUT, I found out the hard way, you do not get the entire DA everytime with this procedure. You must use a DA mover program which leaves the DA as a "complete Resource" when you copy a DA. Using DA mover from Quick & Dirty Vol 1 from Dreams of the Phoenix is such a program. The new one from Apple may do it also, but I have not checked that one out yet. You must be able to get at the "DITL, DLOG, MENU, STR#" resources of a DA in addition to the DRVR resource. Then and only then will you have the entire DA. Use REDIT to copy and paste each section of the DA into your application. This will be a mutiple step process. If the DA has a "DITL,DLOG,STR#,DRVR" resource, then copy first the DITL, then DLOG, STR#, and DRVR sections. DO NOT COPY THEM ALL AT ONCE. I have had REDIT bomb that way. Putting 12 DA's in the System and 6 each in the Finder, Switcher, MacWrite, and MacPaint gives a total of 36 DA's you may use. This is twice as many as normally can be used. And this is only using three out the four slots available in the switcher. I personally use Desk Accessories alot. Grouping them with applications has given new meaning to the use of these gems. I hope you can use this information to increase the pleasure of using your Macintosh. Rees Roberts 70705,1420 Racine, Wisconsin.

DeskZap version 2.0b12 by Bruce Tomlin DeskZap is a desk accessory which will let you perform many useful operations on files and disks. With DeskZap, you can: • set the Finder information for a file (including the Protect bit) • remove linefeeds, control characters, etc. from text files • delete, rename, copy, and create files • move files to different HFS folders • create, delete, rename, and move HFS folders • close open files Note: This document is in Helvetica. If you don’t have the Helvetica font in your System file, that’s why it looks like trash. DeskZap 2.0b12 documentation Page 2 Working with disks In this view, each disk is represented by two icons. The first icon tells where the disk is; the second icon tells what type of disk it is (MFS or HFS) and whether it is locked or not. The second icon does not appear for an unlocked MFS disk. Ejected disk Disk in internal drive (or lower drive in SE) Disk in external drive (or upper drive in SE) Hard disk (or third floppy drive on SE) Locked MFS disk (400k) Unlocked HFS disk Locked HFS disk The Unount button is used to remove all knowledge of a disk volume from memory. You must eject floppy disks with shift-command-1 or -2 before they can be unmounted. Option click this button to force the disk to be unmounted using System 4.2 or later. In the future, I plan to have this button say “Eject” for floppy disks that are in a disk drive. The Rename button lets you change the volume name of the disk. (the name below the disk’s icon in the Finder) The Default button sets the default directory to the selected disk. This button is only enabled when a single disk is selected. The default volume is shown in boldface type. The arrow keys will select the next or previous disk. The shift key selects multiple disks. DeskZap 2.0b12 documentation Page 3 Working with files Document Application System file Folder Locked file (appears to the right of the file date) The Disks button returns you to the view of all available disks. (See page 2) The Back button drops you back one folder level, and returns you to the disks view if you are currently in a first-level folder. The Delete button deletes the selected files and folders. Currently, you can’t delete a folder that contains files. I plan to fix this. The Rename button renames the selected files and folders. The Set File button changes the Finder information for the selected files…
