___________________________________ Documentation by David Dunham Special thanks to "Cajun" David Richard, Andrew Welch and Matt Slot ©1995-8 by Ambrosia Software, Inc. Welcome to Eclipse 3 Flying toasters and exploding rabbits are fun for a while, but perhaps you’re getting a little tired of using a screen saver that takes up huge amounts of disk space, devours memory, slows down your Macintosh, and causes inexplicable crashes? Or perhaps you’re using one of the many unsupported, slightly buggy, feature-starved shareware screen savers? If either is the case, we have the screen saver for you. Introducing Eclipse 3: a lean, mean, 100 percent PowerPC native screen saving machine that works great on 68K Macs as well. To eliminate the problem of extension conflicts, we designed Eclipse as an application so that it retains the benefits of extension-based screen savers while avoiding their propensity to cause problems. After all, a screen saver is supposed to save your screen, not crash your machine. Unlike some other screen savers, Eclipse uses very little memory and processor time to do its job. Thus, Eclipse will never slow down your Macintosh. However, even with Eclipse’s svelte form, it offers all of the useful features you could ever want in a screen saver, presented in an elegant and straight-forward user interface. Moreover, Eclipse doesn’t merely dim the screen; it displays the current time floating on the screen, graphics (PICTs, JPEGs and GIFs) and QuickTime™ movies from a folder full of choices. You can select the graphics and movies to be displayed by dropping them into the Eclipse Graphics folder. In addition, Eclipse offers such conveniences as password protection, and you can customize its extensive feature set any way you like. Eclipse Documentation Welcome to Eclipse 3 In addition to these traditional phosphor burn-in prevention methods, Eclipse can control the Energy Saver features of the MacOS. You can set how long you'd like an idle machine to wait before automatic monitor deactivation, hard drive spindown, and computer shutdown. All of these protective measures can reduce physical wear on system components, and can result in increased cost savings through reduced energy bills. With apologies to a certain brewer, our slogan is “Eclipse: Less filling, saves great.” About this Manual This manual assumes that you are familiar with the Macintosh and its basic operation. If you need help using the mouse, choosing from menus, or working in the Finder, please consult the Macintosh User’s Guide that came with your Macintosh, or the online Apple Guide found under the Balloon Help menu. If you don’t like to read manuals... Go directly to Chapter 3, Getting Started. This chapter briefly describes how to get Eclipse up and running in just a few minutes. The details of the product are described in the remainder of the documentation. If you prefer step-by-step instructions... Chapters 4 through 9 provide a detailed …

E DGE D IVE C OMPUTER S IMULATOR Version 1.0ß8 - March 7, 1991 ©1991 by Gertjan J. Noordman “Edge Simulator” is free for personal use only, and cannot be sold Written in MPW C++ 3.1 I N T R OD U CT ION The program Edge™ Dive Computer Simulator is a simulator for the Edge Dive Computer. The program simulates diving with the Edge for both no-decompression and decompression situations. The program uses the same decompression algorithms and shows the same display as the actual Edge dive computer. This text serves the purpose of a manual for the program, but is actually an addition to the owner’s instructions manual for the Edge dive computer. The reason is that familiarity is assumed with the usage of dive computers in general, and possibly with the Edge dive computer in particular. Also, this text is not intended to be a replacement for the Edge owner’s instructions manual. T H E E D GE D IV E C OMP U T E R The Edge (Electronic Dive Guide™) is manufactured by Orca Industries. The Edge Dive Computer, ©1984 by Orca Industries, is a compact submersible computer which provides the diver with information to plan a dive, it is a precision depth control, dive timer and surface interval timer. It handles single dives as well as repetitive dives. The Edge calculates continuously the decompression status based on the diver’s individual dive profile, and gives the diver a continuous readout of this status. -2- Dive Mode Surface Mode Figure 1 Edge display shown when underwater in a no-decompression situation, and at the surface. The simulation program uses the same decompression model as the Edge, i.e. the Haldanian decompression model which is similar to the Navy standard air decompression model. The model is based on the uptake and elimination of nitrogen in twelve tissue groups with half times ranging from 5 to 480 minutes. As for the Edge, the update interval for the decompression status is 3 seconds. T H E S IMU L AT ION W IN D OW The simulation window for the Edge contains all items to control the diving. The window contains the Edge display, a depth control for changing the diver’s depth, a time scale to change the scaling for the actual time, a clock for the elapsed time, and buttons to control the simulation. There is only one menu item for program control, i.e. the Quit item in the File menu to quit the program (same function as the close box in the window). The Edit menu is supported for Desk Accessories, and has no usage for the program itself. Edge Display The main item in the simulation window is the Edge display (figure 1). Following is a short description of the numeric information tha…

Department of Computer Science, University of Warwick Coventry CV4 7AL, UK Edsac A Tutorial Guide to the Warwick University EDSAC Simulator by Martin Campbell-Kelly December 1995 © Martin Campbell-Kelly, 1990-95 The Cover The cover illustration shows an interactive computer game of Tic-Tac-Toe developed by a student programmer in 1952. To play the game, Load... OXO from the folder of Edsac demonstration programs. Enter your moves using the telephone dial. Edsac A Tutorial Guide to the Warwick University EDSAC Simulator Martin Campbell-Kelly Department of Computer Science University of Warwick Abstract The EDSAC was the world’s first practical stored-program computer; it was designed and built at Cambridge University, and performed its first fully automatic calculation on 6 May 1949. The Warwick University simulator is a faithful representation of the EDSAC designed to run on the Macintosh computer. The user interface has all the controls and displays of the original machine, and the system includes a library of original programs, subroutines, debugging software, and program documentation. This report includes a description of the EDSAC and an account of the seminal programming techniques developed for it during 1949-51. Several demonstration programs and programming problems are supplied, so that users can gain first-hand experience of what it was like to develop and run a program on a first-generation computer.
