FinderIconCM 2.4 Copyright © 2003-2005 Hide Itoh <hide@pixture.com> All rights reserved. PIXTURE STUDIO <http://www.pixture.com> What is FinderIconCM ? FinderIconCM is a contextual menu plugin for Mac OS X. It let you copy/paste/clear/view icon(s) without opening Finder's Get Info dialog. It also allow you to store up 80 icons to its own stock and let you paste icon from the stock, and create a new icon by combining two icons. Features • It can handle multiple items (folders, files, volumes) with one operation. • It can use PICT data in the clipboard for pasting even if there's no icon resource (icns) in the clipboard. (this is a feature that you can not do from Finder's Get Info dialog) • View mode is designed to help people learn Mac OS X icon design by looking other people's icon closely. • When copying icon, it creates and copies 128x128 PICT data to clipboard in addition to icon data (icns) • Icon stock can be used for storing up to 80 frequently used icons, and you can choose an icon from the stock to pasting it to the selected items. • It can create a new icon by combining a base folder icon and the icon of the selected item. A newly created icon can be saved as a new folder, or can be copied to clipboard or icon stock. Notice (Important) • You can not change icon of special item like 'Application folder', 'Document folder', etc... with FinderIconCM. Of course, you can not do this even from Finder's Get Info dialog. So it's not a limitation of FinderIconCM but a design of Mac OS X and Finder. So don't send me an email to ask 'How to change such folders'. You maybe able to change icons of such special folders using some other software like CandyBar from www.iconfactory.com, (although I am not sure because I have never tried it). • Also you can not change neither the items in the read only volume (e.g: CD-ROM) nor items that you do not have write permission. • Currently FinderIconCM does not display any alert or error messages. For some rare errors, it shows error message to the Console. I will remove it with the future version. Installation For your convenicence, simple AppleScript to install the FinderIconCM is enclosed. Just run the 'InstallFinderIconCM' script to install and follow the direction on the screen. You can manually install the FinderIconCM by copying 'FinderIconCM.plugin' package to either '/ Library/Contextual Menu Items' folder or '~/Library/Contextual Menu Items' folder. If you don't have '~/Library/Contextual Menu Items' folder, simply create a new folder and copy it there. In this case, you need to either restart computer, or logout and login again, or restart the Finder to use the FinderIconCM. …

In the time-honoured tradition of using the previous manual as kindling for the next manual, we present... The Book of Words Manual Updated (03 December 2000) Work In Progress -- latest versions always available at www.finderpop.com If you think I've forgotten anything, mail me! New in 1.9.2: More bugfixes, better Multiple User support, that little FinderPop68KProxy.app applet for grab-and-drag is now installed on demand, a new Lock/Unlock "FinderPoplet" (written in AppleScript!), there's a new "Repopup" Key (defaults to ENTER -- this pops up a new contextual menu on whatever you select from a FP menu), Sort by Label, the mbar!!!! and fsel!!!! extensions , and no installer so "Bovine Phlegmatic" still has something to vex him. FinderPop will not work natively on OS X. See the FAQ. New or changed bits in the manual are in this awful colour. Contents Introduction - what is this FinderPop thingy, anyway? Installation and uninstallation The Basics and A Quick Look at what FinderPop can do for you The FinderPop Control Panel The Appearance, Options, AutoPopup, Behaviour, Keys, Items, and About subpanels. Some FinderPop Enhancements Set File Creator/Type and File Open/Save Dialog enhancements. FinderPoplets (or FinderPop Extensions) Bugs & Troubleshooting Things you probably didn't know about FinderPop and more you didn't want to know FAQ me! Frequently Asked Questions (and some of their answers) Colophon - legal niceties and contact info What is FinderPop? Hmmm. Good question. FinderPop is a control panel that extends Mac OS 8 or 9's contextual menus using a FinderPop Items Folder, much as the Apple Menu Items folder does for the Apple menu. Some people think of it as a launcher that takes up zero screen real estate, merely a click on any blank area of menubar away. Others see it as a handy filesystem browser, allowing quick and easy access to their files in the Finder, as well as enhancing navigation in the Standard File and Navigation Services dialogs, as well as in "Path Popups." Still others see it merely as a means to get a Windows menu in the Finder by option-clicking a blank area of menubar, or an Applications menu by command-clicking a blank menubar area. A few foolhardy souls claim that the FinderPoplets and the Set File Type mechanism are worth a mention. A few more think that control-free popup also works fairly well. It's not quite a kitchen sink, but it's getting close. (In fact, certain unkind ex-users have suggested that it's like another -- less salubrious -- piece of household plumbing, which modesty forbids me to name.) Oh, did we mention that it does a nicer Hierarchical Apple Menu than Apple Menu Options? Since the manual that …

Introduction Finder Palette is a file launch and organizational utility. With Finder Palette, you install links to your frequently-used applications, folders, desk accessories, etc., in a special launch palette. You then use the launch palette to launch/open those frequently-used files. With Finder Palette, you are not required to place your frequently-used files in a special folder (like you are required to do with Apple Menu Items). Since files can be located anywhere on your hard disk, the installation process is simple. And, as you will see, customizing Finder Palette to suit your personal preferences is a breeze. The launch palette contains an array of 3-dimensional buttons (or cells) that are labeled with the icon of the installed file or folder. Finder Palette supports the new System 7 color icons, including custom icons, and properly hilites them (instead of simply inverting the colors). Finder Palette's user interface was constructed with navigational speed in mind. All of the functions can be invoked from the either the keyboard or the mouse, eliminating the need to switch back and forth between the two. Even check boxes, radio buttons, and push buttons in dialog windows can be selected from the keyboard. And the launch palette can be accessed almost anytime using user-configurable “hot keys” and/or “hot corners”. Requirements • Finder Palette requires System 7.0 or later. If you attempt to run the program on an earlier System version, Finder Palette will warn you and then gracefully exit. • 150K of RAM is required. • A hard disk is required. • Finder Palette looks best on color monitors with at least 16 colors (and so do the file icons), but it works quite well on black and white monitors, too. Features -1- Finder Palette incorporates some of the more popular features found in other shareware and commercial file launch utilities as well as some features not found elsewhere. This version sports the following features: • Many Supported File Types: - applications - desk accessories - control panel devices - folders - system Clipboard file - Finder • System 7 Color Icons, including the new custom icons. In addition, Finder Palette properly hilites the icons; some applications simply invert the colors of the icons, which is not consistent with the hiliting scheme used by the Finder. • Finder-like Launches. Although Finder Palette is not meant to be a substitute for the Finder, it will attempt to launch applications just like the Finder does in memory-tight situations. For instance, if there isn't enough memory available to launch an application with its preferred memory partition, Finder Palette can attempt to relaunch the application with the application's minimum memory partition (just like the Finder does) if you so desire. • Auto-open Documents that can be attached to a cell's file to be opened at launch time. • Intelligent File Searches for files that have been m…

Programming Notes FINE-TUNING YOUR dBASE Mac PROJECTS Here are general guidelines for streamlining your dBASE Mac pro- jects. The time you spend in preliminary design will improve your project's performance. When to Use Internal and External Indexes • An internal index helps you sort and select your data faster on the field for which you've created the index. • An external index allows you to create an alternate access path to reference the same data by a different key. Maximizing Project Efficiency • Minimizing project size will improve project load and run time and make it faster to switch to other projects or to quit and return to dBASE Mac. • Split your large projects into smaller, functionally cohesive modules. This reduces the number of views and files you need to have open at one time. (You still may need to have related files open to resolve relationship pointers.) • Breaking data files with a large number of fields into two or more related files increases efficiency. • Use multivalued fields and sets for small numbers of occur- rences. Break larger relationships into separate files. • Keep unused views closed. It takes time and memory to refresh the screen. View Features • Don't program when you don't have to. Take advantage of dBASE Mac's field definition features such as range checking, pattern matching, field formatting, choices fields, logical fields, type checking, and display options. • Although you may accomplish the same results within a proce- dure using an input dialogue, it is often more desirable to take advantage of the view-based field definition features for improved performance and functionality. • Minimize the number of fields used in each view definition. • Take advantage of Transfer Views for processing all records within a file. Procedures and formula fields may be used to enhance these processes. General Tips • Optimize performance and the use of disk space by using the file reorganization feature. Refer to the Using dBASE Mac manual for details of file reorganization. • Keep RAM Cache off or low. dBASE Mac provides RAM caching automatically. • Using globals and memory fields to store and retrieve single data items is faster than writing and reading data items as records. • Keep the use of desk accessories to a minimum. • dBASE Mac evaluates formulas any time the contents of affected fields are modified or redisplayed. To minimize unnec- essary formula evaluation, only use formulas for data that changes frequently but is displayed infrequently. For data that you change infrequently but display frequently, use a data field that you calculate using the posting mechanism or a procedure. Use of Pictures • Based on information provided by Apple in Macintosh Technical Notes # 141, the maximum number of pictures in a single file is 2 72 7. Be sure to keep t…
