Macintosh Common Lisp 2.0 Release Notes These Release Notes supplement the material in Getting Started with Macintosh Common Lisp 2.0. MCL 2.0 conforms to the Common Lisp standard as it is described in Guy L. Steele’s Common Lisp: The Language (Second Edition). The ANSI Common Lisp standard continues to evolve through the work of the ANSI X3J13 subcommittee. In a few cases we have incorporated post-Steele details in MCL 2.0, based on our understanding of the ongoing work of the subcommittee. The second edition of Steele (which we’ll refer to as Steele2 below) is, however, the Common Lisp reference intended to be used with this implementation. Previous versions of our Lisp product have been called “Macintosh Allegro Common Lisp” — this is the “MACL” you will encounter as you read this document. MACL 1.x versions were based on the first edition of Steele’s book (Steele1 from now on). Actually, the lineage of this Lisp goes back farther still, to a product called “Coral Common Lisp” (this is why, for example, the package in which we have defined our extensions to the Common Lisp standard is called “CCL”). This document contains five sections: Part 1: Installing Macintosh Common Lisp 2.0 . . . . . . . 2 Part 2: General Notes on MCL 2.0 . . . . . . . . . . 4 Part 3: Third-Party MCL-Based Tools . . . . . . . . . 12 Part 4: Upgrading from MACL 1.x to MCL 2.0 . . . . . . . 14 Part 5: Upgrading from MCL 2.0b1 to MCL 2.0 . . . . . . . 18 If you are just starting out with MCL 2.0, you probably do not need to read past the first section for now. After you’ve gone through Getting Started and become familiar with the MCL environment, come back and skim Parts 2 and 3; you may find the information they contain useful. Although some effort has been made to divide information among the final two sections in a reasonable way, you may find it useful to skim both of them. MCL 2.0 Release Notes 1 Part # 030-1960-A Part 1— Installing Macintosh Common Lisp 2.0 If you have a CD-ROM drive attached to your Macintosh, simply drag the “MCL 2.0” folder from the MCL 2.0 CD-ROM to your hard disk, then proceed to step 9 below. Installing from Floppy Disks The three MCL 2.0 floppy disks each contain one segment of a Compact Pro archive. The archive is “self-extracting”: you need only insert disk #1, double-click on the “MCL 2.0.sea” application’s icon, then follow Compact Pro’s instructions. Compact Pro will create a folder called “MCL 2.0” containing the entire MCL 2.0 environment. Make sure you have 5.5 megabytes available on your hard disk, then follow these steps: 1. It is a good idea to back up the three disks shipped with MCL 2.0, just in case you need to reinstall…

February 26, 1986 MOLECULAR EDITOR DEMO public-domain demonstration version of a software-based molecular model kit developed at Drexel University With Molecular Editor, you can construct and view molecules or crystal structures of over 100 atoms in a three-dimensional representation (this demo version permits molecules of up to 15 atoms only). Atoms or ions are drawn as patterned circles with radii proportional to the element's radius. Bonds are drawn as either simply patterned rectangles for single, double, triple, or other bond types, or as lines (a wireframe representation). You can draw molecules in a number of ways: all atoms and all bonds, atoms only, or bonds only. You can rotate a molecule through any angle about any of three orthogonal axes, either by single steps or continuously. You can also rotate only a portion of a molecule with respect to another portion, thus producing conformational changes about a single bond. You can place any atom at the origin of the screen coordinate system (the center of the drawing window), and you can orient any bond attached to that atom along the x-axis. You can invert the coordinates of any or all atoms through the origin. You can also reflect any or all atoms through the XY, XZ, or YZ planes. You can rescale the molecular display, or independently rescale the whole set of atomic radii while leaving bond lengths unchanged. This latter feature permits continuous variation from a touching-hard-sphere model to a bonds-only model. You can edit any molecular structure from the screen. You can change covalent bond types, make atomic substitutions from a palette of 10 atom types, and delete atoms or bonds using the backspace key. The default palette contains the elements C, H, O, S, N, P, F, Cl, Br, and I, but on a 512 k Mac these may be easily changed to any element of the periodic table, each with its own editable pattern. You can measure the distance between any two atoms, the angle between any two bonds attached to the same atom, and the torsional angle about a bond. You can change the perspective, or viewing angle, from which the molecule is seen. The standard Macintosh commands Cut, Copy, and Paste are implemented in three dimensions in Molecular Editor. This feature allows you to build virtually any molecule from an initial collection of basic structures and functional groups. In the full release of Molecular Editor (not in this demo version), you can store stuctures on disk and retrieve them as Molecular Editor files. If you rotate a molecule, you can see either the transformed cartesian coordinates or the original coordinates in the coordinate table. You can choose the rotated form as the identity, or at any time revert to the original coordinates stored in the Molecular Editor file for that molecule. You can open up to 20 files at one time and flip the display manually between them. If you are running Molecular Editor on a 512 k Mac with at least 256 k bytes of memory allocated to the program…

1 Macman ™ MANUAL Version MAC051199 MACMAN ™ MACINTOSH MIDI INTERFACE The Macman MIDI Interface allows your Macintosh computer to send and receive MIDI. If your sequencing software does not include a "MIDI Manager," you will need to acquire Apple's MIDI Manager or Opcode's OMS. Both of these are a free download from either company's website (apple.com or opcode.com). In almost all cases the Macman does not need power because it can draw current from the Mac itself. However, some Mac com- puters, like the Powerbook 500 series, cannot supply enough power. In this case the Macman has a power connector on the side for use with an optional 9 volt dc adaptor. To install the Macman connect the included serial cable into the Serial In connector on the Macman. Plug the other end of the ser- ial cable into either the modem or printer port of your Mac -- either port can be used. Just make sure the MIDI program you are using is set to the same port into which your Macman is plugged. Macman does support both the new 9 pin serial GEO port and the old standard 8 pin serial port. Macman operates in MIDI mode when the INTERFACE/THRU switch on the right side of the unit is pressed In AND a MIDI application is being run. When the unit is properly activated in this fashion, the red POWER LED will light, indicating that you are in MIDI mode. The Macman is now able to send and receive MIDI when addressed by a standard MIDI application.
