README Page 1 of 2 Saved: Sunday, November 13, 2022 7:20:44 PM HotJava(tm) Browser 3.0 ----------------------- This directory contains the complete release of the HotJava Browser. JavaOS(tm) Systems ------------------ This release of HotJava Browser has been qualified on the JavaOS 1.1 operating environment, running on SPARC(tm)-based JavaStation(tm) platforms with the Java(tm) runtime environment (JRE) 1.1.6 software. At this time, HotJava Browser has not been qualified on Pentium-based JavaStation platforms. Due to differing security models, HotJava Browser is not supported with Java(tm) Development Kit (JDK) 1.2 (Java 2). On JavaOS systems, the HotJava Browser release is contained in the file browser.zip, found in the same location as this README file. Do not unzip this file. Solaris(tm) Systems ------------------- This release of HotJava Browser has been qualified on the Solaris 2.6 operating environment with the Java runtime environment (JRE) 1.1.6 software. HotJava Browser is not supported with JDK 1.2 (Java 2). By default, the Solaris release includes the 1.1.6 version of the Java runtime environment, and SSL release 1.1.2 if you installed a version with SSL support. The file Browser.jar contains all other files that make up the browser. Do not extract the files from this jar file. To launch the browser, run "./hotjava". If you'd like to launch the browser without seeing the "splash screen" (the rectangular startup screen that appears on your system while the browser is initializing), use the command line option -nosplash: "hotjava -nosplash". Other Platforms and JDK/JRE Versions ------------------------------------ The only officially supported environments are the ones listed above. HotJava Browser does run on other platforms, and it is likely to run with other 1.1.x versions of the JDK or JRE, but these are not supported environments. If you want to use a different version of the JDK or the JRE, specify that version during the installation script, or set the environment variable JDK_HOME or JRE_HOME, respectively. If you set both JDK_HOME and JRE_HOME, the JDK_HOME environment variable will be the one used. HotJava Browser on other platforms might ship with different versions of the JRE than the 1.1.6 version that ships with the supported releases. Check the Web site where you downloaded the product for more information. Setting System-wide Properties ------------------------------ If you'd like to set up system-wide properties that affect all users of the browser in your installation (for example, proxy settings or the default home page), you can specify global properties in an admin properties file. See the documentation in admin-docs/properties.html for more information. Using Alternate Character Sets ------------------------------ To successfully view a page containing an alternate character set, you must RE…

APPLESHARE SERVER SOFTWARE VERSIONS AND SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY This document attempts to clarify which AppleShare Server Software versions will work on which system software. It includes information on hardware that is appropriate for a given configuration. The starting point for this document is Apple Tech Article TA21622 "AppleShare: Platforms and Mac OS Releases Supported" and Apple Tech Article TA21611 "AppleShare and AppleShare IP File Sharing: Chart of All Limitations." Secondary sources consist of the numerous Read Me files and administrator guides that shipped with the products contained in this archive. In specific instances, an Apple Tech Article or a KnowledgeBase Article helped provide some missing information. Approximate file dates and timestamps have been filled in by looking at file timestamps on the installation media. Recommended system software information comes reading Administrator Guides and Read Me's. This software archive contains ALL known public releases of AppleShare Server, AppleShare IP Server, and AppleShare Pro. It also includes a selection of Macintosh Manager clients, Apple Remote Desktop 1.2.2, all known versions of At Ease and At Ease for Workgroups, all known versions of Apple Network Assistant, all known versions of Apple Network Administrator Toolkit and relevant versions of Apple RAID/SoftRAID. There is a Documentation folder on the archive that contains any available electronic documentation for this software. ITEMS MISSING FROM THE ARCHIVE: LaserShare 1.0 disk# 690-5139-A (AppleShare 1.0 Server and AppleShare 1.1 Server did not ship with a print server. LaserShare 1.0 was released and marketed as Apple's print server for early Macintosh computers.) AppleShare Server 2.0.1 Administrator Guide is also missing. MkLinux, as you probably realize, is Apple Computer's Mach 3-based version of the GNU/Linux operating system. Versions of MkLinux run on the Intel, PA-RISC, and PowerPC architectures. This disc contains the version of MkLinux which runs on PowerPC-based Apple Power Macintosh and related systems. With DR3, MkLinux binary executables are compatible with the other PowerPC Linux systems (e.g., LinuxPPC). In addition, MkLinux file systems are byte- order compatible with other (e.g., Intel-based) Linux file systems. Also, MkLinux DR3 supports dynamic shared libraries, for greatly reduced disk and RAM storage and faster program loading. Developer Release 3 has been a long time (over a year!) in development. It supports many more machines since the last release (DR2.1) and offers much more flexibility in terms of installation options. As a result of this flexibility, the installation process has become rather more complex. We have tried to retain as much simplicity as possible, however! If, after reading these notes carefully, you still have trouble getting MkLinux to run, please make use of the wide variety of user-contributed support resources. Specifically, you should start with the "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) on Apple's MkLinux web page (www.mklinux.apple.com). If the FAQ does not help you, please use the MkLinux mailing lists. The "mklinux-setup" list is probably most appropriate for problems you might encounter while installing MkLinux DR3. Submit your question (in detailed form) to the mklinux-setup email list (the MkLinux web site has links to a sign-on form). The members on the setup list are very helpful and knowledgeable about a wide range of machines. Please do not contact directly Apple Computer's MkLinux team or Prime Time Freeware for support on MkLinux. Put simply, neither organization has the resources to help you. You will get better results with the FAQ and mailing lists. Machine List ============ MkLinux DR3 will run on the following PowerPC-based Macintoshes: Power Macintosh 6100 Power Macintosh 9500 Performa 61xx Power Macintosh 9500/180MP Workgroup Server 6150 Power Macintosh 9515 Power Macintosh 7…

# @(#)README 8.1 (Berkeley) 5/31/93 The potentially offensive fortunes are not installed by default on BSD systems. If you're absolutely, *positively*, without-a-shadow-of-a-doubt sure that your user community wants them installed, whack the Makefile in the subdirectory datfiles, and do "make all install". =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Some years ago, my neighbor Avery said to me: "There has not been an adequate jokebook published since "Joe_Miller", which came out in 1739 and which, incidentally, was the most miserable no-good ... jokebook in the history of the printed word." In a subsequent conversation, Avery said: "A funny story is a funny story, no matter who is in it - whether it's about Catholics or Protestants, Jews or Gentiles, blacks or whites, browns or yellows. If a story is genuinely funny it makes no difference how dirty it is. Shout it from the rooftops. Let the chips fall all over the prairie and let the bonehead wowsers yelp. ... on them." It is a nice thing to have a neighbor of Avery's grain. He has believed in the aforestated principles all his life. A great many other people nowadays are casting aside the pietistic attitude that has led them to plug up their ears against the facts of life. We of The Brotherhood believe as Avery believes; we have never been intimidated by the pharisaical meddlers who have been smelling up the American landscape since the time of the bundling board. Neither has any one of our members ever been called a racist. Still, we have been in unremitting revolt against the ignorant propensity which ordains, in effect, that "The Green Pastures" should never have been written; the idiot attitude which compelled Arthur Kober to abandon his delightful Bella Gross, and Octavius Roy Cohen to quit writing about the splendiferous Florian Slappey; the moronic frame of mind which, if carried to its logical end, would have forbidden Ring Lardner from writing in the language of the masses. -- H. Allen Smith, "Rude Jokes" ... let us keep in mind the basic governing philosophy of The Brotherhood, as handsomely summarized in these words: we believe in healthy, hearty laughter -- at the expense of the whole human race, if needs be. Needs be. -- H. Allen Smith, "Rude Jokes"

What Content —> Content About This Archive This is an archive of the PREP Editor, a collaborative (Version 1.0a17) writing environment. PREP is a Macintosh application, compatible with System 6.0 and higher, including System 7. About PREP The PREP project is funded by the National Science Foundation and Apple Computer (ATG/ER). Our goal is to develop a system that encourages and facilitates collaboration in writing, without imposing requirements on connectivity and concurrency. Therefore, PREP requires no central server, and is not a synchronous "shared-screen" word processor. PREP provides a column based interface where related information is linked across columns. To some degree, PREP provides an unlimited amount of "virtual margins" to take notes in. Installing PREP If you have gotten this far, you have unpacked the archive and correctly launched the PREP Editor application. PREP requires no special folder or files. It will create a preferences file in your system folder or preferences folder. Comments about the It is common for first-time users of PREP to feel that PREP speed of PREP is very slow because of the amount of time it takes to open the tutorial files. The PREP Editor is a research prototype, and thus we have concentrated on speed issues to the best of our ability. However, large files, such as the tutorial files, can take up to 60 seconds to open on slower machines such as the Macintosh Classic or SE. Please note that once they are open, these large files can be edited and viewed with a quick response time. We have chosen to optimize the incremental editing behavior at some price at “document open” time (We also realize, of course, that PREP will never be “fast enough”, by definition). About Claris XTND The latest versions of PREP use the Claris XTND technology to make it easy to import documents for annotation in PREP (and export them afterwards with the annotations stored as footnotes). How to tell if the XTND You can tell if the XTND technology was installed correctly system is installed if, when you start up the PREP editor, there is an expanded dialog box when you use the Open, I…
