WORKING 2.3 GHZ DUAL G5 FOR $150!!! Hardware 49 posts Mar 2, 2008 — Mar 6, 2008
Been stable for an hour.

No rhyme or reason.

Of course, the law says, that it must freeze after posting that it has not frozen for some time.

- The screen freezes.

- Any sound playing, will go into a loop of a short section of the sound.

- The red light turns on.

- Either immediately (rare) or after two minutes, the fans rev on.

- Only remedy is to hold the power button down to turn it off, and then turn it on again.

It seems to crash primarily during sleep or periods of low stress. If I play a game it doesn't crash. It will crash when I'm typing or just playing a song.

I do not have Apple Hardware Test that works with this G5. My disc works with older G5s.

I have TechTool Deluxe from AppleCare. One test fails:

Drive HardwareFailed

Checks the physical attributes of the device containing the selected volume.

You should consider backing up the data from the device associated with the selected volume. The device may continue working without issue for a period of time, but may physically fail without warning.
It may only be failing in this tower though. I'm going to have to move my drives back to the slower G5 and then run the test again to be sure my drives aren't about to fail.

Test fails in the old tower but I think it's a false result, because it's in a RAID maybe.

I'm back on old reliable for now. I'm gonna stick an old drive in the new G5 and install Leopard and see what happens.

If anything send that G5 my way :D

If those tests fail, especially in two different machines, I would take them seriously and back up your data. In addition, check the Disk Utility to see if either of your drives shows up in red on the s.m.a.r.t. status indicator, or if their names appear red. If they do, then immediately start backing up and getting a replacement drive.

dunno if this has already been suggested, but is it under warranty?

Yeah seriously, call up apple and give them your serial number.

It's out of service. There is no AppleCare.

Since it's sold as a "LIQUIDATION FIXTURE" I can't have the date moved ahead in time like I did with the MacBook Pro.

Bummer.

They both pass SMART. These are almost brand new drives. 2x 250 GB Western Digital in a RAID 0. I think TechTool Deluxe does not know how to handle RAIDs and reports a fail. I read one post online with someone else who had a RAID, passed SMART but failed TechTool.

It appears the G5 will be parted out. I think it's a bad logic board, and that the processor is OK, but it's really impossible to tell. I'll have to try selling the processor with a guarantee and the logic board AS IS and see what happens.

Very nice score, hopefully that motherboard "problem" doesn't come back to bite you.
Also (and this is probably just me) what is with "hating" people that happen to get good conquests, or any conquests at all for that matter? Really? I never got that... why not just a congratulatory pat on the back. Should be happy knowing they're keeping another old (or in this case, new) computer from going unused. I know you're not serious, but still, what gives?
Really??? :?: :?:

It's all in jest as you surmised. I even took the comments as jokes. I understand that no one likes trolls or flamewars, but let's lighten up a bit. Sure I wish I had found one of those and sure I'm envious, but most of my time is spent with my family instead of actively looking for old Macs or computers. I'm glad for Mike that he found it at such a steal. Sad though that he's having hardware problems though.

But really, we all need to lighten up a bit. My opinion, of course... :-/

I was the first one to say "I kinda wanna hate you over news like that" but followed with a :beige: . My humor isn't always appreciated I suppose so I do want to make it clear the statement was more out of admiration for the find and less about hating anyone. That's a good find Mike and I'm glad it fell into your hands.

It sucks you've gotta part it out though.

I love you all.

Happy?

Now give me your Macs plz.

That laughing smiley makes me warm inside :)

And I Kiss You too!!!!!!111!1!!11

No way! I like walk also! My favorite sport.

Really though, I'm glad to see someone else shares my dream of being a minor internet celebrity on a webpage that looks like it came straight out of 1999. My old (retired now) website didn't get a single functional coding revamp in about 8 years... I was so proud of that. :)

Anyway, I have no reason to hate anyone for scoring a G5... I wouldn't know what to do with all that power.

Well, the reason it looks that way is that it's been around since the late 90s. I remember seeing this years ago and thought it was hilarious. Then years later we find out about this character called Borat that suspiciously reminded me of Mahir (Mahir actually sued Sacha Baron Cohen because of this). I'm kind of on the side of Mahir on that since I can say I've seen his site WAY before Borat came on the scene, but whatever. ::)
