posting from my 540c using th onboard nic with a newly acquired AAUI-RJ45 tranceiver. snatched one + an origninal apple LC PDS card with AAUI connector from ebay for one buck. mainly got it because of the AAUI-RJ45 - but the card is a nice add-on

good thing is that AAUI-RJ45 thingies alone go for around 15 bucks

btw... 68kmla.org really sucks in msie 3.01 - as does the rest of the interwebs

iCab with CSS turned off is very usable on a 68040. I use it on my PowerBook Duo 280c on a fairly regular basis now. (I'd say about half of my 68kmla posts are done from that computer now.)

Netscape 4 is passable, but iCab really does make pages appear closer to what more modern web browsers do.

Is there any difference between browsing with iCab in System 7 vs OS 8?

I am thinking about taking OS 8 off my machine... it seems to bog it down quite a bit.. but I don't want to completely destroy my ability to browse the forums.

Not really. I use iCab mostly in 7.6.1, but I can't tell any difference between 2.9.9 in OS 9 and 2.9.9 in System 7.6.1. iCab 3 is noticeably different, but it's only available for OS 8.5 or higher on PPC

Nice work on the 540c. I f you have limited RAM I would suggest downgrading to 7.5.3 or 7.6.1 if you have it. Your machine will be faster and you should have more resources to allocate to your web browser.

20MB in the 540c is prolly enough. running 7.6.1 from a 1GB HDD.

They go for $15 each? I found a pair of them at Micro Center marked down for $3 each, plus I got a couple more in my latest conquest.

Oh, and as for 68kmla sucking in MSIE 3, I disagree, it looks kist fine in PMSIE on my Jornada 820

2.9.9 is the last version to run on 68k machines or OS versions below 8.5. It is outdated and can't do everything required of a modern browser but some machines can't run anything newer. It isn't likely it will ever be updated again.

Yeah, I was typing it while using a wireless keyboard while my mouse was out of reach, it was quicker to type it myself than to go back and hit 'quote'.

In reality, the two are quite different beasts, with different rendering cores. (iCab 3 passes the Acid2 test, iCab 2.9.9 does not.) iCab 2.9.9 is a true "Classic" application, and can run from System 7.0 (with some tweaks,) all the way up to 9.2.2. iCab 3 is a Carbon app that needs Mac OS 8.5 (with CarbonLib) or higher; and runs as a native OS X app as well.

Finally, iCab 4 is a pure Cocoa app, which requires Mac OS 10.3.9 or higher. It also no longer uses Clauss' custom HTML renderer, it uses WebKit. (It is a good way to get the HTML rendering engine from Safari 3 onto Panther, though.)
