IIvi on Ethernet Network

Been lurking a bit and decided to join up. I've got an old IIvi I dragged out of a skip last week and am trying desperately to get it onto my ethernet network/broadband connection with a mix of macs running OS X.3 through X.5. The II doesn't seem to find any of the other computers or the internet connection and none of the OS X machines can find the IIvi. It is currently running 7.5.1 and I'm using an Assante localtalk to ethernet adaptor. I'm fast running out of patience.

(a) how are you connecting to the Assante local talk adapter? You need localtalk cabling, not a serial cable.

( B) do any of the others actually have AppleTalk configured and running?

© you have file sharing turned on?

I am using a localtalk cable and file sharing is on. The OS X machines are set with appletalk on and to configure automaticaly. Wondered iof it is something to do with the mactcp panel.

It will have nothing to do with MacTCP since we are dealing with AppleTalk over LocalTalk here.

If the mac has file sharing turned on and appletalk turned on then mac osx should see it in the finder network pane.

The IIvi comes in that nice, solid metal case that is just perfect for supporting big monitors. I had a IIvx that I pulled the motherboard out of and installed a Q700 motherboard in, though I'd have used a Q650 board if I'd known then what I know now. Anyway, if the IIvi motherboard has an AAUI port on it, you can get an ethernet dongle and connect it directly to a router without having to pass the internet connection through another computer if internet access is your goal.

And there is the small hurdle that OS 10.4.x and up doesn't 'do' AppleTalk, but it will graciously accept an overture (as server) over TCP from a Mac running System 7.5.5 or higher (as client) with OT 1.1.2. Spare your hair and do as Quadraman advises, if AUI (on a card) is accessible as with a NuBus NIC with AUI, or better, an RJ-45 port. You may also need a 10Base-T hub between the IIvi and other members of your LAN if the NuBus card doesn't 'do' autonegotiation, which it probably will not.

IIvi and IIvx don't have AAUI ethernet. I added an Asante Nubus card to my IIvx.

I may try taking it up to system 7.5.5 (which I haven't used since my 5200 died) and using OT. A nubus ethernet card is a nice idea but I live in the UK and they rarely come up on ebay and would probably be more then I want to spend on this mac anyway considering I have an Assante adaptor already.

I live in NZ and mine cost about $10 from some outfit in the US.

Yup, NuBus ethernet cards are common and cheap on eBay US. I have bought Farallon PN590a (recognized by 7.5.5 without additional drivers) for 0,99$ ;-) Don't be afraid of duty and taxes. All ware under 22 Euro of value is duty free according to EU regulations.

I have one of those ethernet to Assante localtalk/ethernet adapters and there's some fine print somewhere that it's missing some automatic recognition thing or something on the ethernet side. (can't remember exactly). But this makes it incompatible with many routers. Mine would only work if I used a 4-wire patch cable to the router or an 8-wire crossover cable directly to a Mac.

Watch the Tx/Rx lights and see if they are bouncing back and forth to verify the ethernet side.

You're probably thinking of the 10-vs-100Mb/s autodetect problem. Many newer routers won't slow down properly to work with older adapters. A solution is to get an old hub with dedicated 10Mb/s ports and insert it between the router and the Asante.

You know exactly what I'm talking about. I had forgotten exactly what the problem was, but you describe it perfectly.

The 4-wire trick only worked with very limited success. Often times I had to turn the box off and on repeatedly until a connection was made.

I'm sick of the adaptor so just bought a nubus 100mb ethernet card on ebay for £7, hope this works better.

] ]'> The card was still boxed with the cellophane wrapper intact, never used. Loaded the drivers, plugged it in and got online straight away. However I do think it's time for me to upgrade from Mosaic for compatibility and the sake of my sanity.
