Quadra 605 - leaky caps?
Alright, I've been a little reluctant to post pics of my "workspace" because I am embarrassed by the extreme mess. But what the heck....
The basement is where all my crazy ideas come to life. So it's bound to be a little messy. Spare parts everywhere, carcasses of Macs all over the place, etc.
So here it is in all it's glory. I'm particularly proud of the TAM and Franken Mac 8600.

Mine is actually a guest bedroom now, but I was allowed to bring my old IKEA (Niklas) desk in, which has just my iMac, the Pismo, and a few essentials like my camera, box of notecards, and iPod sitting about on it. It's not a particularly big desk, but due to the shelf above and below, I could probably load it down pretty well if I wanted to. Three more 17" monitors would fit on here, and the various CPUs would easily fit below and around the desk.

Here's my workstation area. This photo is somewhat old (Celeron PC is now an Athlon XP PC), but the layout remains the same:

Yes, my 605 lives! 
I pulled it out and it was a little dusty. I had a nice seagate HD in there, and one of those cool SIMM-adapters that gives me 2 SIMMS in the place of the one slot on the MB. I also remembered that I had tracked down a real '040 and replaced the LC version that was in there.
The first boot it did nothing, no chime. I let it run for about 1 min and shut it off.
2nd boot same thing- nothing. Oh oh I thought. I put in a new battery, there were no leaks in the one in there (from 1996). Caps not obviously leaking, but yeah, there seem to be a mess of them.
3 power cycle I got a Chime after about 20 seconds! But no HD activity, and the monitor wasn't syncing (using LCD with VGA adapter thing).
4th power cycle I got chime right away, and video!
I let it sit, it started to boot, got the happy Mac icon then it rebooted.
That reboot it booted all the way up into 8.1, where I had left it. Everything looks good, ethernet works... this looks nice.
20 Megs RAM too.

haha well hairy boot up's like that are most certainly caps.
What kind of psu do you have in there is it a TDK? if its a TDK those caps are going to need to be changed really soon.
Aztec ones are better but still have leaky cap issues.
With these things it should power up first time every time.
if not then the caps are toast.
the only other variable is the HD… those can fool you, will work fine for a while, and then suddenly stop...

I made a intro youtube vid, it's got my main workplace in there. I have another one, and I should actually give you guys the grand tour of my house, macs are sprinkled everywhere. it's like a bowl of neopolotin ice cream. a little of every flavor. Except x86 macs, don't have any of those yet. x86 PCs, however.

My Quadra 605 chimes, then death chimes a few seconds later.... I assume its the caps, I have given the board a wash but it hasn't fixed erecting. I'm very unskilled at soldering, so hopefully I'll have someone repair it for me 
My LC 475 works but the sound is very quiet so it also need caps (But I'm scared to get this done, as it is my childhood Mac, my families first Mac and I don't want to break it!

It needing caps must be a high priority, but to test it, remove all the RAM from the Q605 and see if it boots with less RAM. Then take the RAM out of the LC475 and put it in the Q605 and test that. Final tests is to remove the hard drive and see if you get a floppy disk with a flashing "?" and replace it with the one from the LC475.
Sometimes the Chimes of Death are from a bad boot blocks on the hard drive. Depending on the machine and where it fails, most of the time it brings up a Sad Mac but there are times when it wont and only give you the Chimes.
If you worry about doing a recap yourself, Uniserver does a great job for reasonable price.
lol intense? You asked me if I would reduce the price of a recap to a LC-III because you have already changed 4 caps.

If you or anyone sends me a MB, Its going to get a complete service, that way at-least I know for sure the caps are done right.
and the board has been properly cleaned and tested.
The last thing you need when working with this old vintage stuff is more variables.

Once someone pays for something, they expect results.

I'm not sure why you felt the need to post part of a private message here. Yes currently Uni is EXTREMELY time consuming/intense/busy for me at the moment and funnily enough I don't have time to locate the Quadra 605 in the garage to test varying combinations of RAM to see if it was RAM problem rather than a capacitor problem.
And yes I did ask you the question on a reduced price, because I thought it was perfectly reasonable to ask, considering I have the replacement tantalum capacitors for the LC III meaning (Well as I thought) the price of the capacitors would no longer be part of the service.
As for replacing capacitors myself, never again. I was able to replace 4 of the larger ones in my LC III successfully but the risk of damaging the a board attempting it again is too high.
I never said you were not serious about capacitor replacement.
