Bourns Filters for SE/30 - where to buy?
I know Digi-Key "lists" the Bourns filters used by the SE/30 logic board, but they don't stock them:
http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/929643-rc-network-25-ohm-200pf-16-dip-4120r-601-250-201.html
Therefore, does anyone one a seller who does have stock of them? Or is there someone among us who has a few spares (known-good chips, ready to be soldered into a board)?
Thanks.

Newark/Farnell has them:
http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=39K2504&CMP=AFC-OP&CMP=AFC-OP
I used to order from these guys before, but most of their stuff has to come from UK which takes awhile, and they charge exportation fees.\
might be cheaper to order direct from farnell export site.

Farnell UK has them:

But RS Components UK is a tad cheaper on quantities of 5, although not by much:
http://uk.farnell.com/bourns/4120r-601-250-201l/filter-t-network-200pf-25r/dp/9356010
These chips are freaking expensive! I didn't find anything on EBAY either.

TTI seems to have them in-stock (minimum order of 20 though). The part number is right, but the data sheet and technical specs are wrong:

I also found these guys, whose website looks like it was created 10 years ago or so:

Thoughts?

Sorry, I did a bad copy/paste on the RS UK link above. Here's the correct link (which shows a discount for 5 pcs):
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/rc-network/6909903/
All are searches for part number: 4120R-601-250/201L
Problem is that both Farnell UK and RS Components UK require you to register with a UK address. And the US branch of RS doesn't list the Bourns filter:
http://www.alliedelec.com/
Ack!
Here's a zoomable hi-rez photo of on of my recapped logic boards:

The 3 Bourns filters are shown at right in that photo (RP2, RP3 and RP10).

For future reference, octopart.com is a great search engine for finding who has what in stock and at what price.
Thanks, Bunsen. Here's the quicklink search for the Bourns network filter on that site:

But alas, it only lists what I already listed earlier in this thread.
It seems the only place to buy outside the UK is from Newark. But dad burn it, that $20 handling fee is simple outrageous if you're only wanted to order $25 worth of chips! Not to mention shipping fees are on top of that. Ack!

maybe a group buy? then again, need demand for a group buy to be worthwhile.
Since there are so few "knights" of tech out there, I was just thinking of buying 6pcs or so and sending them all to you. Who else among us would put them to such good use as you? If there is anyone, of course, please speak up now.
I don't mind paying $4-$5 per chip plus a reasonable amount in shipping. But a $20 "handling fee" for no good reason (Newark) is a rip-off!

Well thats if you order from newark, that $20 fee is for them to order from farnell and have them shipped to their warehouse. Then from there, shipped to the destination.
i wonder if you can order from farnell directly? to avoid that fee? I doubt it but its worth a shot.
Oh when it comes to those filters, you can test if they are bad by doing this one SIMPLE step:
if there is any continuity between the ground point which would be 10,11 and 1,20 of the filter, to any other pin, its bad. Especially if its low ohms from pin to pin.
Speaking of knight of tech, I gotta finish up rebuilding a plasma TV Y-sustain module. I really hate those TVs. with a passion, especially when they decide to blow out. When they blow, they blow... take out nearly every power transistor in the ER and Y-SUS output stages. yuck.

Sadly no. As I mentioned in a previous post in this thread, ordering direct from Farnell requires one to ship to a UK address. I do have a friend in the UK, but once you pay the friend to take a trek to the post office and pay the international shipping fee, you're out the same as that outlandish $20 Newark fee.
Too bad they don't carry them at Radio Shack!
Too bad they don't carry them at Radio Shack!
yea i know. Only thing they carry at radioshack anymore is phones. phoneshack it is.
I think I bought some of those from DFSales a year or two ago. I don't remember what I paid though. I thought their price was reasonable, but that's all the memory I have. Sigh. Leaky brain. I know I didn't pay more than $2 each at the time, as more than that would be notable even for my terrible memory.
Trag, goes that mean you still have a stash of Bourns filters that you would be willing to sell at a reasonable price?
Trag...?
(Ditto my previous question.)
(Ditto my previous question.)
I think I do, but I can't seem to find them. I thought they were still in my room, in my box of active (most used) parts, but I couldn't find them in there. I checked my attic inventory listing, but they're definitely not in there. I remember getting them, but I can't remember what I did with the tube after I took it out of the box. It may be hiding on my work bench. That's harder to explore.
I also went through my mound of old receipts and didn't see one, but that doesn't mean anything as that gets sorted every year. I can't access my older emails (on-line invoice) because my primary machine died a while back. I have backups and such, but haven't had time to fix the machine and bring it back up. The laptop and web based email has been keeping me going the last six months.

You can try ordering one via the Bourns sample service.
I know this isn't really a "fair" way to obtain parts, but at least you can get the part this way.

SEthirty, bless you, friend!
And although it would be wrong to use "samples" on a continual basis, fact is that none of us have tried that specific part number first-hand (not to my knowledge), and so we would need a few samples to test. Why pay $20 to Newark for something that may or may not work perfectly? Then once you have tested the samples and verified they work, then of course ethics would compel one to make a purchase for additional parts.

I think with samples though, there is a limit. you can only sample so many of one part. like 2 or 3. I could be wrong with bourns, but its like that with maxim.
Yeah, it would be kinda logical to have a limit.
I order quite regularly op-amps from National, for my high-quality CD-player (yeah, I'm kinda audiophile
)
They ship up to 5 types of things per week, at a maximum quantity of 5 per type.
That is really nice of them, because now I can try lots of different op-amps, so I can determine which one sounds the best in my design :beige:
For the ones who are interested : it currently is the LM6172, originally a video-op-amp.
It really would cost me a lot of money to buy them all, and maybe use them once or twice, if them don't sound nice.
But, please, don't over-use this !

speaking of audiophile, ive fixed quite a bit of CD players in my time.
I had to take 2 CD-701ES models and make 1 good one. the servo amplifier IC was shorted in 1 which burned the entire laser pickup unit, melted it down.
The second one had a bad photodiode assembly. So i had to take the 2 optical pickups apart and swap the good pieces around between them to make one good pickup assembly.
Then that brought one of them back to life.

Ah, the old Sony's...
There were a couple of models in the ES-series that had indeed problems with an IC (I haven't got an idea which one it was), which ran way to hot, which caused all kinds of weird problems.
I'm more a "Philips-guy", I own several nice Philipses, like the CD880, and a mint CD303.
Quite worth a bit these days, especially in mint-condition.
Those early CDM0/CDM1-transports were really superb, with real glass lenses, magnetic laser movement, and all kinds of other of nice, durable things.
They don't make 'em anymore like that... :'(
Oh well, if the major brands still used those quality parts in their products the economy would fall in no time, because the stuff just wont die !
Anyways, enough about audio, let's stay on-topic.

ive worked on a couple philips units. i forget what was wrong with them. One of them used a radial swing based pickup assembly.
Ah, there we go again...
You worked then on quite recent models, because all the older Philips CD-players had the nice magnetic swing-arm mechanisms.
The newer CDM12 & 14 were (and are) a lot worse, they already give problems if you only look at them }
Oh well, at least they are a lot cheaper, so it won't hurt your wallet so much if you need to replace them.
Component level repairs are really a no-go with their flimsy PCB's.

thats what i said, magnetic radial based swing type mechanism. I managed to fix all the ones i ran across, except a denon which used a philips mechanism, which was slightly newer, still radial based, but it used a motor instead of a magnet/voice coil assembly.
Has anybody got theirs yet?
Mine needs one right away, or something like that. Letting it sit for a week or two made it a very unhappy Mac. Just gives me the irregular "raster" image, no chime or nothing.
Same thing? I wonder what is the difference between the ND and the regular version. Octapart lists the L and the LF versions: A+ for telling us the difference.

I've been waiting to hear back from TechKnight about that. So far he hasn't mentioned anything, so I must assume he never got free samples. So much for parts suppliers being honest about "free samples"!
Well I will have to get two, a spare for my spare motherboard.
If you want me to look into shipping some o'der, hit me up in a couple of weeks.

TechKnight currently is working on two of my dead SE/30 boards which I could not repair. He thought the problem on one of the boards to be the BOURNS but later found (after he removed and destroyed that BOURNS) that it was a different problem. That board has been repaired but it won't work without a new BOURNS. And for TechKnight's trouble, I wanted to buy him some spares. But the only seller I could find who has them in stock wants a ridiculous sum for a transaction fee. I then was advised about "free samples" so I submitted a request on behalf of TechKnight, and even one of the salespeople from BOURNS contacted him, but apparently they don't have any in stock (they merely told him they would check).
And so, we are left with going back to that seller with the big transaction/handling fee. But if more of us could pool our needs together, we could buy a lot more chips, and in that case the handling fee wouldn't be as expensive. The shipping fee is nothing compared to that stupid handling fee!

Well the bourns was bad. for sure. BUT. it wasnt causing simasimac. The other board I narrowed down to either a bad GLU or bad FPU, the overlay is never flipped, but ROM CS is active. I would like to find a battery destroyed/exploded board so i can make 1 from 2. I am probably going to run it on the IR machine most likely, pull the CPU/FPU/GLU and put a socket in the CPU. They are on ebay i believe.
