Bourns Filters for SE/30 - where to buy?
Should we start a new thread to gather interest in pooling an order for BOURNs filters?
Okay, I found my order of ten that I placed a couple of years ago. Apparently, my order from DFS was fulfilled by questcomp.com. I ordered a bunch of them. After they arrive, assuming that they don't discover that they don't exist, I'll put them on the list of parts with the capacitors. They'll be $2.50 each with a capacitor order, or $2.50 + $3 shipping if ordered alone. My usual terms for international shipping will apply (add international postage to what a USA customer would pay).
DigiKey on the first page says they need 500 to bother ordering any, and that's a lot for us. (Unless we sent out search drones to covertly cull every SE/30 alive on the planet in for Bourns network filter replacement...that is.) Entering in 500 returns a page that says you need 2000, with a lead time of about two months. (June 16th, estimated, from today.)
I did some more Google-Fu and turned up this.
It was mentioned that someone could have ordered some then, heck if they ordered 500 for us then, we'd be set! But the sentiment seems to be that you could just pluck one from a SE mobo. Or make your own, they aren't that hard, as seen here:
I'm thinking I could just make my own on a 20-pin DIP socket and some prototyping board.
EDIT: Word in that thread was that Quest Comp may have some. Their ordering system is borked, I'd rather call them.
EDIT2: I'd have to know the wattage rating of the resistors and the caps. That may actually be possibly done with SMD components to help keep the size down. Might be smart to put some kind of EMR shield or something.

I got the bourns from trag/JDW today. 6 of em.
I think I need two, one for sure. LocalTalk is spotty.
Probably best to use a 20 pin DIP socket rather than resoldering the filter right back in?

Yippee-kay-eh! :approve:I got the bourns from trag/JDW today. 6 of em.
Trag has 4 more. PM him.I think I need two, one for sure.
Excellent. We must be real team players here.
BTW. PM inbound.

I see that my earlier message was a little unclear.
I meant:
1) I found my old order of ten from two years ago. On the package I found information implicating Questcomp.com.
2) The evening I posted my earlier message, I placed an order with Questcomp for a bunch more of the filters.
3) When that large order arrives, I will add them to my list of available parts http://68kmla.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=167588#p167588 with the capacitors and other sundry.
However, that order has now arrived. I didn't mind fulfilling JDW's and MK.558's requests from my original ten, because by that time I had telephone comfirmation that my new order was being filled.
So, will now go add the Bourn filter to my list of parts. The price from now will be $3, rather than the $2.50 I wrote above. I apologize for the difference, but it was late when I posted the $2.50 and I miscalculated. (JDW, MK.558, no worries, you're grandfathered in. Plus the price was lower on the original ten.)
Wow, I just checked Gamba's old site. He was offering them for $1. They were a lot cheaper ten years ago. We should have stocked up then.
I think that I didn't get that original ten from DFS Sales. I think I probably ordered them directly from Questcomp and then forgot that I did. I had DFS bookmarked for so many years....

I'm mentally clicking "LIKE" on your your post, Trag!
That's great news indeed.

You guys wont believe this....
The 3 samples from Bourns showed up today.... They are brand new with an april datecode of this year, They had to manufactured
They are 4120R-601-250/201
Even crazier is the fact that the box is 2 feet long, and 3 inches by 3 inches square.
The plastic tube was almost as long as the box, to contain only 3 chips. Weee, waste of packaging much?

"Ask and ye shall receive" comes through once again. I must admit that after their last response to you I was skeptical. But it just goes to show that sheer act of asking, combined with persistence (and properly worded emails) pays off. It also shows that BOURNS is an honorable company that keeps it word. They posted "free sample availability" on their site, and despite being out of stock they manufactured these chips in order to keep their word. Astonishingly honorable. You guys wont believe this...?
You now have your hands full of BOURNS filters, technight!
yea.. They either manufactured a large amount them to stock other suppliers and sent the samples along the way, (more likely) or manufactured just the samples. (less likely)
I found these network filters in 3 places.

TechKnight, it's been about a year and a half since I shipped two of my non-functional Simasimac motherboards to you, along with those Bouns filters. As I recall you were waiting to obtain some other parts in order to make a repair. Have you been able to accomplish that? I am especially interested in getting back the socketed CPU board.
Many thanks!
Many thanks!
One works. Other one I gave up on and put it on the back burner. BTW. This is something that should have been handled in a PM.
I could send it off to uniserver and let him take a stab at it
Thanks.

On Semiconductor does this. More than once I have ordered samples from them, 5 SOIC-8 chips that came in a 18" long IC tube. The tube was inside an even longer sealed anti-static bag along with several packets of desiccant and a moisture sensing card. This was wrapped in butcher paper and stuck in a box roughly 8"x12"x24" which was sent UPS.Even crazier is the fact that the box is 2 feet long, and 3 inches by 3 inches square.
The plastic tube was almost as long as the box, to contain only 3 chips. Weee, waste of packaging much?
I have seen a similar deal where a friend of mine in the UK ordered some stuff from Farnell and one of the items happened to be 5 resistors that actually shipped from Newark over here in the US, sent overseas via UPS in a big box. 5 little resistors!
I think these companies get bulk deals on shipping as well as the packing supplies and it ends up being cheaper for them to use the same packaging for everything. Still seems like a waste though to UPS a big box with a little padded envelope would suffice.
Sorry about that, I had no intention whatsoever to chastise or criticize you by my previous post here. I didn't think anything of making it public in light of the fact you and I have discussed this publicly before, and you also even posted a publicBTW. This is something that should have been handled in a PM.
Anyway, I shipped 6 Bourns filters to TechKnight in May 2012 (kindly sold to me at the time by our very own Trag) because TechKnight needed to replace them on one or both of my boards. So if you replaced the Bourns on both logic boards, TechKnight, then whomever else would like to take a shot at the board can rest assured that the Bourns filters are not the root problem!
Anyone up to the challenge?
Yea, the first board (socketed). is fixed. I did fix that. caps rotted the RAM traces out.
The second board I think has bad GLU.

BTW. Its not a big deal, it was just at the spur-of-the-moment skim on your post basically made me feel slow. LOL
I am slow at doing things and getting things done damnit... LOLLOL
All joking aside. Its been awhile. thats for sure. Not a whole lot of time, and a project that was totally forgotten about. whoops.

Anyways.
here is a SE/30 i am working on here that has the gangster stripes.
this board has some unique filters i have not seen before so i figured i would take a picture and share,
maybe this part number will come up even cheaper?
