I was going to use my LC475 exclusively for a month to do EVERYTHING I normally do (graphic design, website redesign, editing my blog on blogspot, household finances, grab pics from my ancient Kodak digital camera, internet stuff) but its logic board recently died.
Now, I'm not so sure. I'll figure something out soon...

Well... for backup I had This running for a while. before a Lightning strike hit the pole outside (killed the telephone, TV tuner, Cable Modem, and several power systems (along with all of our computers and my PowerBrick for my Pismo and iBook G3 (don't tell apple that when I sent that one in, it didn't die naturally 
) )
Anyways, that worked for floppy archives. i got another hard drive exactly like the one in that. but other than that, I sadly don't have any vintage machines other than my B&W G4 (upgraded to a Yikes! CPU) would that count? Probably not :-(

I would quite like to use my Mac Plus for a month. It was my main computer about 5 or 6 years ago and I used it exclusively for about 6 months before getting an LC 475.
What are the rules here though? Do you have to use a retro machine for everything, or is it acceptable to use a more modern machine for internet and other neccessities that may not be entirely possible with an old machine. I'm a newcomer to this concept.

mine isn't that special but i really want to do it.
over the past few months i've been starting to use my SE/30 more and more. if there is a job i can use my se/30 for then i allways will but i obviously can't use it for everything. (photo editing, gis and autocad to name a few)
during the retro challenge i should have more time then i do now so i think i'm going to dedicate that time to putting as much functionality in my SE/30 as possible so i can use it more often and for more tasks then i can now.
first of all i want to upgrade my SE/30 (new screen, 1gb hard drive and more ram)
i also want to get some of my old hardware working again (a scsi cabinet with 2 18gb hard drives and a StyleWriter)
and get some new hardware (scsi zip drive, maybe a scanner and a cd drive)
and then i want to find more software. i would like more games but they are easy to find and not a very big priority. i need more productivity stuff. a good technical drawing program, flowchart etc etc

well, to keep me from renigging on my promise (i.e. cheat) I am letting my friend borrow my iBook G4 1.2hz for the rest of the month, and am going to use my PowerMac B&W G4 (w/1GB RAM and a 32MB PCI Radeon 7000) and a 160GB internal drive. I am going to try to use my faster PC less to make sure I maximize the time on the G4 
Anyway, i will let you know if the "Crack" get's the best of me and I am going to have to go into retro-rehab next month to kick my addiction to fast speeds
I know this needs to be retro, but this is the slowest machine that I own (aside from my mom's imac DV which doesn't belong to me anyways) so you gotta let me work with what I got [

I think this year the challenge is just gonna be do whatever you want, if someone wants to use there Powermac G5 and call that retro, they are free to do so, but people are probably going to be more interested in the person using a Classic or something. I'll probably just record some music with my Quadra or something.
It wouldn't be much of a challenge though - I reckon I could easily use my G3 instead of my PC if I wasn't bothered about not being able to play many games during that time. It does everything else pretty well, and I quite like using OS X too

I used OS 9 for a week or so. It's really not that bad. I miss it in some ways, and not so much in others.

I don't especially like System 6, I can never understand why people use it on Macs that will happily run 7.6.1, it's just really old-fashioned and has no features at all! 9.1 is the beat Classic OS in my opinion. 7.6.1 is OK for 68ks, although it would be nice if you could have desktop wallpapers in it, a feature that was missing from the Mac OS for far too long!Not even System 6? No Classic OS is especially stable, but you can still pick the best Classic OS just like you can pick the best Windows 9x. We should have a "what's your favourite Classic OS" vote
Jaguar?! That's really slow isn't it, it was before they really optimised OS X from Panther onwards. Maybe on a G5 it's still fast, but something newer would be a lot better
No 68k requires System 6 though (they can all run 7, except the 128/512 which I don't think can run 6 either), so it's not really a 68k thing. I always associate 7 with 68ks, as that's what they were always running when you used to see them in use. And retro's not necessarily better, that's like saying Windows 3.0 is better than Windows 95 just because it's olderYou people are crazy! as soon as I get it, i'll be using my newton as my PRIMARY machine. that will be a challenge. I will load it up, and then go for a week on it, only interfacing with my B&W to backup/grab files/whatever.
I was thinking of using another one of my old powerbooks, but I feel that is not good enough.
If I can't get the newton and B&W playing nice together, I will use my Powerbook 1400 as a helper machine.

meh, I was thinking about it. 3gb HD, 40mb of ram, Mac OS 8.6, and the wavelan card. the battery only gets an hour or so. I can see why the 1400 was a budget model.
I have really been thinking of getting a 3400 or kanga. They seem to be really durable, and they have FEETS, something the 1400 is missing.
but for now, my mind is made up: i'll be working off my newton. I have the keyboard, all I need is a charger.
