So...Whatchagunnado?

If I enter any challenges, i'll be using either Windows 3.1, Windows 95, System 6 or System 7 on a 68k or a 486. They're all fine OSes, and fine machines.

I reckon I will use my IIcx with System 6 or A/UX for a retrochallenge. Originally I was going to use the Plus or SE/30 but I thought a colour machine would make a nice change from what I'm used to. Also I haven't ever used the IIcx for anything productive, so it will be a good way to get the machine back on the road as such.

I have been using my B&W G4 for a while now (past 10 days) and find it quite fast. Then again, i have been using OS X. I might drop it down to OS 9 for more pain

That's about as Retro I can get, because I don't have any slower machines .

I know it's a lot, but for what I do, i NEED a fast computer. But in a way, i have enjoyed using my Blue and White again. It's surprisingly faster than I thought it would be. Plus, it's been on a botched install, so I am surprised it even runs

Welcome to my world! I have been using a Graphite 466MHz Sawtooth G4 for the last year and a half now as my main machine. I don't have any newer machines, so in my mind the G4 is pretty fast.

my B&W G3 400mhz (overclocked from 350), 512mb, 120gb OS X 10.4.9 machine has been my primary mac for almost a year and a half. It is quite nice, but I have been thinking of bumping up to either a sawtooth, dual processor, or quicksilver G4. My B&W has ran (in this order): Mac OS 9, Ubuntu 5.10, Mac OS 9, Ubuntu 6.06, Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.4. It is running on the tiger installation from october of last year. Take that windows users who have to reinstall every month.

Thus, I do not consider using my B&W or my pismo as my challenge, since they are my daily drivers.

my primary machine is my iBook 1.2Ghz. Soon, with the help of a friend I will have a macbook (hopefully the black one) that will replace the iBook. That will be my main system then. but for gaming, the iBook and the PC are tied

I'll be using my se/30 to get on the net, the powerbook 100 or Portable for a laptop, the mac plus for some stuff, and the IIfx for non internet work(if i can't find a nubus rj45 ethernet card by then).

I'm not too sure, I've got so many choices here...

Is there any limit to how many retro machines that can be used over the span of the month?

the only computer in the house faster than 1ghz is my mother's toshiba laptop with a 1.8ghz celeron. currently it needs a hard drive, but I bumped up the ram from 256mb to 512mb, so Xp will run better. All I need to do now is find a Mini PCI wifi card, or whatever it takes. All I know is it looks like a Mini PCI, and there are 2 antenna connectors in the bay (the slot is in the same bay as the 2 memory slots).

anyways, my ideal setup would be my LC III, OCed from 25 to 33mhz, running on a full 36mb of ram, and a 250mb HD (up from 80mb), and a ethernet card in the PDS slot. Unfortunantly, that is disassembled, as we are in the process of "moving", as we have been for 2 years now. That was the first thing I packed up too...

but yeah, I ran that LC III setup as my primary machine for several months until I got my B&W. can you believe it? it's not a bad little box. and since, I have added a 256k vram simm, so I can get thousands of colurs. the monitor seems to be dying, as I get the swimming effect. Oh well, it's just the basic colour monitor. I know the machine needs a new mobo or something, as the audio circuitry is blown. I was thinking of adding in a Q605, P460/P466/P467/LC III+ board. I don't know, I don't really miss the audio. I do like the startup chime. I know the machine needs an OS reload. when I tried to run OS 7.6, it had a hard time for some reason. When it was my daily driver, it was running OS 7.5.5, and was very stable.

Speaking of old books on computer design... I've got a copy of "Logical design of digital computers" by Montgomery Phister, Jr. circa 1958, sitting right next to me. You know it's got to be legit if the word "digital", and "computer" are strung in the title.

Personally, I like the Noam Nisan and Shimon Schocken book "The Elements of Computing Systems" Published by MIT Press (so you know it's good stuff!) that I won at Toor Con on the panel with Captain Crunch. Good times.

Anyhow. I'd say, got to go with the 4-Bit system that is shown in the Radio Shack "Digital Electronics" book!
