Iraq to take 'non-conventional' action

Iraq said today that it may take "non-conventional" action tonight against US-led forces who have seized Baghdad airport.

"We will commit a non-conventional act on them, not necessarily military," Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf told a news conference, adding the act might be tonight. "We will do something that will be a great example for these mercenaries."

Sahaf added that US forces were on an "isolated island" at Baghdad airport. "It is difficult for the US forces that are surrounded in Saddam airport to come out alive, he said.

US-led forces have been on alert for possible Iraqi use of biological or chemical weapons, which Baghdad denies it possesses.

Earlier today, it emerged that US troops had discovered two sites where Iraq is believed to have been manufacturing chemical weapons.

Hopefully they will not use WMD. Or if they do that we will stop them before they have the chance.

As if what they have done so far is "conventional."

Fake surrender. Suicide bombings. Forcing children to fight. Using civilians as shields. Execution of POWs.

Of course they used some conventions - they surrendered en mass like in 91.

BAGHDAD (CNN) -- Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, or a man who looked like him, on Friday urged Iraqis to fight U.S. and British troops "with what you have available" and promised they would be victorious.

Life has gotten so ... surreal. Try to think of a time when a news story had to say "or a man who looked like him" in reference to a TV address by the head of a nation (for now, at least) -- and it made perfect sense in the context of the report.

i heard that iraqi guy come on and announce that they were gonna do unconventional stuff today. then it seemed like less than an hour later he came back on and said they weren't.

wierd.

i still can't believe that the supposed saddam was out in the mix in the middle of that huge crowd. has anyone ever seen a similar bit of video where saddam has ever been surrounded like that? i have seen him up on a balcony with a ton of people below, but never seen any thing like that. the thing that really made me question it was when he was kinda giving "low fives" to those around him. he must be from the west side.

Greta Van Susteren just had a guest on who interviewed Saddam 3 times (albeit, in the 70's) and apparently knows quite a bit about him. He said that he didn't believe that was Saddam for the reasons you mentioned. The persona of that dude in the video was lighthearted, he was being touched and picking up kids. The guy in the interview said that Saddam hated to be touched.

Thought I'd throw that in there...

i missed greta tonight. i probably only have seen as much saddam as all you guys, but that did seem completely out of character

The news story didn't have to say "or a man who looked like him". This appears to be a deliberate policy decision, either by the administration or by the news organs (most likely the former) to bait Saddam into 'proving' that he is alive, so as they can get another pot-shot at him.

They didn't have to do anything -- you're right. That's why they don't have to write what the administration tells them to.

The U.S. administration may have made a deliberate policy decision to cast doubt on Saddam's current existence, but it's quite a stretch to say that CNN simply follows the administration's dictates. Since this story ran, I have seen several people interviewed on CNN who say they believe that WAS Saddam. Did the administration tell them to do that, too?

I didn't mean to imply that the news media blindly followed the administration's diktat, but the fact is that if every government/ armed forces spokesman that is interviewed says 'or a man that looked like him', then it is an easy habit for everyone else to fall into.

OK, I see. That's a reasonable point, I think. Sorry if I overreacted -- there's been a lot of irrational stuff about the media on the boards lately.
