But since we are into the REALLY REALLY old but REALLY REALLY good anime series I MUST mention The Mysterious Cities of Gold! Fab!!
Also the "Once upon a time... Space" by Procidis (ok that is a French series but dis not the French/Belgian cartoonists - they are the best the Western world has to offer)

Absolutely wonderful. One of the Best Series Ever.
Unfortunately, the professional translation is poor. They got Crispin Freeman -well known in the dub world for not being good at voice-acting- to adapt the screenplay for English, and it doesn't work nearly as well.
Oh, and see if you can find a fansub for Episode 18. Buy the professional disc as well -eye-bleeding video quality is nice, and the disc is very impressive from a technical standpoint, and perhaps most importantly it will keep you on the up and up- but this is one that the fansubs did better. The best one is done by PeroPero Fansubs, but they scrupulously pulled it when Right Stuf announced they had it, and this was in the days before digital distribution, so it will probably be very hard to find.
Ninja Scroll,
Battle Angel Alita
Akira
Ghost in the shell.
Has Ghost in the Sheel 2 been released yet?

Hm, my all time favorites would probably be:
However, I've greatly enjoyed Dokkoida, FLCL, Read or Die, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Millennium Actress, Macross Zero, Like the Clouds Like the Wind, Nadia, and Abenobashi Mahou Shotengai. I like lots of anime though -- it's just that those stand out. (and I have copies hanging around so I don't have to dredge through my memory)
And then there's other fun stuff like Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster, and Ippatu Kikimusume.
Someone mentioned Gundam Wing. I just don't know. All the newer Gundam stuff really doesn't seem as impressive to me story-wise as the older Gundam series were.
- Patlabor 2
- Wings of Honneamise
- Escaflowne (the TV series, not the awful movie)
- Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex
- The usual Miyazaki and Ghibli stuff (Totoro, Laputa, Porco Rosso, Nausica, Neko no Ongaeshi, Mimi wo Sumaseba, etc.)
- Giant Robo
- The Dirty Pair (the original one, particularly the Project Eden movie)

I only see anime my friends buy. So in that sense, I'm not a true anime fan. However, I usually like their choices. As far as anime goes, I really like the goofy comedy series such as Tenchi, Ranma, and Love Hina. I haven't really watched much else, though. I'm sure I'd enjoy more if I took the time to watch it, but I don't take the time to watch much of anything, let alone anime.
I really liked Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. They were fantastic movies.

I can't believe the thread has gotten this far (especially since this is a Mac board) without anyone mentioning Serial Experiments - Lain. That series is incredible.

Ahh! Another one I need to see fully, I have only seen the first 2 episodes, then decided it would be one to buy
And on Metropolis, Yes, that is the one that got me going full steam into anime. I rented it from our local video store and was totaly in awe.
Hmmm.
Now that I am thinking about anime movies, I would have to say that I liked Spirited Away a lot.
