anybody take supplements? I need advice... Hardware 9 posts Jan 2, 2004 — Jan 4, 2004
Since my last posting didnt get the amount of responses I thought it wouldve got. I thought I would give it another shot, does anybody take anything by the name of spirulina, and if so have u noticed any benefits from it. Also, do u think I should be looking into the powder or the capsules. Secondly, Ive come across www.symbiotics.net and a product called colostrum. I am more keen on these two supplements especially spirulina since they have natural and organic instead of manufactured garbage. Any advice would be most appreciated.
I used to take spirulina every day. It's on the short list of supplements that you can physically notice that you took (like, say, niacin). It always made me jittery for a little while. I think it's good stuff, and isn't going to hurt anyone to take some.

I hadn't heard of colostrum before. Frankly, that sounds kinda creepy to me. Are there growth hormones in there? Plant sources always seem the better way to me than animal.

Is there something in particular that you want to take supplements for?

Check these guys out perhaps.
no specific reason for taking spirulina just alround health. although i eat healthy and live pretty healthy lifestyle i just feel physically something is always missing. should i take powder or capsules.
What is the purpose of you taking it?
In terms of protein my understanding is that the body can only process a certain about of protein in a certain amount of time. I used to purposely break up my doses to allow my body to take it in over the course of a day instead of loading it all in one meal or dose. If this has the high content that it claims I assume there will be a threshold of usefulness it will have over other sources. And I was taking it as a means to increase the recuperation time and build muscle mass faster. So if you are not in need of extra protein I would wonder why you'd want to take it... Don't say Atkins.

Many of the "B" vitamins it says it has can be supplemented with a one-a-day and a good diet. Not necessarily a health freak's diet but a balanced one. So if you don't eat well or have some kind of vegan diet I don't know how much you will benefit.

The amino acids part I would say may be hit or miss. Most people do not need to be taking doses of them. Unless you are a very active person, doing more than a normal person's daily exercise regimen, then I wouldn't recommend taking amino acids.

But I have never taken this stuff. I just looked over the claims it made and I think you'd have to assess how your lifestyle would really benefit from them "if" they worked.
This is what I understand Colostrum to be. Not necessarily a supplement by any means.
You do know that nutritional supplements arent assessed by the FDA and have no requirements of being safe OR effective, right? And you also know that just because somehting is "natural" doesnt mean that it's safe and gentle, right? I can name you dozens of the worst toxins and poisions known to man that are "natural" - synthetic drugs however are manufactured for a certain purpose, you can be confident of their purity (who knows what extra stuff is in these suppliments - they dont HAVE to tell you!) and have all been tested exhaustively by the FDA in the US anyway.

Just FYI
maybe i should have mentioned that i do weight train 4-5 days week and was on the look at for something(that being spirulina) just for a bit of a kick.

And to the last poster yeah i do realise not all is what it seems in terms of organic and inorganic.thats why its tough picking good stuff from the duds especially when we had a TGA scare in oz when 1000's of goods were called back.
How old are you. What is your current intake ratios (carbs/protein/fat) How much cardio do you do per week and for how long have you been doing it. And what is your body type.
Not all supplements work, period. Some of the ones that do work are not effective for everyone. Not all supplements that work for a person may be conducive of the goals they are trying to achieve.

I guess I don't understand what you want in terms of a kick.

I believe creatine does help in making the Krebs Cycle more efficient and allows you to work a little bit harder than you normally would. Eating the correct types of food in relation to the time of your workout will make you feel more energetic during your routine. And although I don't recommend it, androstenedione will increase your aggression level after taking it for a couple weeks and if you are a person who can use that aggression to further your workout it can be beneficial. But I really really don't recommend it for everyone or anyone who drinks.
i don't mean to hijack the thread, but while we're here..

captain obvious, you seem to know a lot about supplements. What are your thoughts on 1test, or methyl 1-test? I've been thinking of pickign them up to supplement my weight training with - my calorie/protein/carb intake is pretty good, but I can't seem to get past 135lbs.. I'm genetically doomed to be skinny
