Entire foodcourt in Toronto Chinatown mall shut for gross health violations.
I've been there. It's got the "charm" of Chinatown - dirt and garbage - packaged into a mall. That whole mall is a disgrace. It's like they've never heard of a cleaning service.

In an unprecedented move, Toronto Public Health slapped red "Closed" signs on six restaurants in the downtown food court of the Chinatown Centre at 222 Spadina Ave., near Dundas St. W.
Inspectors cited the Chinese-food eateries for a range of violations, including sanitation problems, rodent droppings, rat and cockroach infestations and food safety issues, said Jim Chan, a food safety manager with Toronto Public Health.
"This is the first time we've closed a whole food court," Chan said. "The places have been warned before, and some of the establishments have been charged before. Today, the inspectors found the sanitation was way too bad."
The restaurants are Dragonball Deli, Dragon Pearl Restaurant, Golden Bull, Cantonese Seafood Stir Fry, Chu Kwong Restaurant and Jan Bao Delight.
Inspectors destroyed about 500 pounds of food deemed a health hazard due to improper temperatures, cross-contamination and unsanitary conditions, he said.
Among the other problems discovered behind kitchen doors were "heavy mouse infestations," "mouse droppings in kitchens," "live cockroaches in kitchens" and a "rat infestation in the garbage room," including one live rat spotted by an inspector during the inspection, Chan said.
"I come two or three times a week," said one woman, tugging at a locked door to the food court.
"It's cheap � $2.99 for five items. But there are some problems. Sometimes the food is not cooked and it's not very clean."

and, to be fair, I should add that they seem to be very tolerant. Except when a liberal loses a debate in the Political/War lounge.

I'm quite glad that I don't frequent those pastures anymore.
I've noticed, over the years, that nearly all the restaurants that have problems with health regulations just happen to serve Chinese food.
The local newspaper prints the scores from recent foodservice inspections and the lowest ones are *always* Chinese restaurants. We don't have a 'Chinatown'. These restaurants aren't in seedy parts of the city. Hell, I live in Charlotte, North Carolina.

don't store food inappropriately
clean food prep surfaces
cook foods thoroughly
wash hands after peeing.
that's pretty much 95% of it.

Well, since most of China is a total mess of garbage, I'd say they're doing it for the authenticity.
I really don't want to know how many mice, rats, 'roaches, bats or elephants run around in the kitchens of the restaurants where I eat... *shudders*
As long as they're not in my food and I don't get sick, I'm happy.
I'm glad to see a crackdown on this. That's what health standards are for. I remember all the pissing and moaning when City council announced the plan and coloured markers, there was outcry from the restaurant owners. Hey, thanks, guys, it's nice to know you willingly ignore safety designed to, you know, not have your patrons get sick from the food you sell.
I remember when LA county (or was it Orange) instituted the grading system for health standards. My brother's parents-in-law were disgusted to find the Chinese restaurant they frequented got a 'C' rating
For anyone who's been to Berkeley, I wonder how many restaurants should be shut down there... :shudder:... When you can get a full meal for $1.99, you know something's up.
