First Strike is a fan-made scenario for Wolfenstein 3D on the Mac by Josh Mills, originally titled "Return to Castle Xeen." It bundles 20 levels plus 2 secret levels and is pitched as a relatively easy entry point compared to Mills's later, harder scenarios. The full version of Wolfenstein 3D is required to play.
What it is
The author's release notes are direct: "Originally Return to Castle Xeen. 20 levels, 2 secret levels. A scenario for Wolfenstein players of all kinds." Mills also produced Dragon Cavern, Castle of Lost Souls, Tiger Cavern, and Castle Xeen, placing First Strike in a long line of his Wolf3D map sets.
First Strike II
A revised release, First Strike II, is also archived. Mills's notes describe it as "the new and improved First Strike," again with 20 levels, but with new enemies, walls, and objects. Both releases are aimed at "Wolfenstein players of all kinds, especially novices," and Mills calls them easy compared to scenarios like Castle Wolfenstein and Temple of Doom.
Requirements
First Strike is a scenario file, not a standalone game: it requires the full version of Wolfenstein 3D for Mac. Mills offered to help players who didn't yet own Wolfenstein 3D via email at copperfield@worldnet.att.net.
Sourcing note
Macintosh Garden's search did not surface a dedicated First Strike entry; the description and version history above are drawn from the BinHex headers of the Info-Mac releases (com/wolf/first-strike.hqx and first-strike-2.hqx). No in-game screenshots are cataloged from those sources.
