About

This Info-Mac patch updates New World Computing's Macintosh release of Might and Magic: World of Xeen from version 1.0 or 1.1 to version 1.2. The update adds native PowerPC acceleration, fully implements the backdrop feature, and fixes a number of bugs, including the notorious crash in the Southern Sphinx.

What it patches

World of Xeen for Macintosh combined Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen and Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen into a single overworld. Earlier 1.0 and 1.1 builds shipped with several stability issues and 68k-only code; this updater brings either revision up to the final 1.2 release.

Notable fixes

According to the Info-Mac submission notes, the patch enables PowerPC native acceleration, completes the backdrop rendering feature that had been only partially implemented, and corrects the infamous Southern Sphinx bug that could prevent progression.

How it was distributed

The updater was posted to the Info-Mac archive by mjk198 (postmaster@semitech.com) and mirrored to ftp.funet.fi under info-mac/game/com/ as a BinHex 4.0 stream. It is a self-applying patcher rather than a full reinstall, so the original CD or installed copy is required.

Compatibility

The patched 1.2 build targets classic Mac OS with PowerPC support, while still running on later 68040 systems. Modern users typically run the result under SheepShaver or Basilisk II with an appropriate ROM and a System 7 install.
