Strangestein 3D is a third-encounter scenario for the Macintosh port of Wolfenstein 3D, released by hobbyist designer J. Roldan in the late 1990s. Built with WolfEdit 2.0.4, Stratavision 3D, and Photoshop 5.5, it replaces most of the original characters, walls, and objects with custom artwork while preserving id Software's classic gameplay loop.
Scenario overview
Strangestein is a single drop-in level pack for Wolfenstein 3D Third Encounter (the shareware Mac edition) or the full commercial release. It loads through Wolfenstein's standard scenario selector and plays as a self-contained adventure.
Custom art pipeline
The author rebuilt the bestiary, environment textures, and pickup objects in Stratavision 3D and finished them in Photoshop 5.5 before reducing them to the engine's palette. Characters were intentionally kept simple because fine detail tends to dissolve at Wolf3D's small sprite resolution.
Origin and distribution
Posted to the Info-Mac Wolfenstein 3D scenario collection (game/com/wolf) by otoao@mindspring.com, Strangestein is one of dozens of fan scenarios that kept Mac Wolf3D alive long after id moved on to Doom and Quake.
Running it today
Strangestein needs the Mac Wolfenstein 3D engine to run; it cannot be played standalone. Use the Third Encounter shareware or the commercial CD inside a 68k or PowerPC emulator and select the Strangestein scenario from the title screen.
