Castle

Castle (full name Castle Wolfenstein 3.8.1) is a freeware fan-made scenario for the Macintosh port of Wolfenstein 3D, packing new graphics, new enemies, and new traps into a tribute to Silas Warner's 1981 Castle Wolfenstein under the id Software engine.

What it is

This is a level pack, not a standalone game: you need a working full copy of Wolfenstein 3D for Mac to load it. Once installed, it replaces the official maps with a new Wolfenstein-themed scenario built around exploration, traps, and shootouts.

New enemies and obstacles

The mod adds a roster of custom monsters: the disgusting Gremlin, the lemming-grade Goon, the vicious Uber-Mutant, the quick Elite Corporal, and the deadly-accurate Captain. Several levels feature ghosts that can't be killed and walls that are completely invisible.

Levels and tricks

The author packs in extra graphics, new wooden doors, replacement "Erdol" treasure pickups, and branching exits where a single switch can drop you into one of several next maps. Multiple-exit levels and hidden passages encourage replay.

Distribution

Castle Wolfenstein 3.8.1 is fully free, not shareware: "when you download Castle Wolfenstein, you're downloading the whole thing." It was uploaded to Info-Mac by Josh Mills (copperfield@worldnet.att.net) and depends on the commercial Wolfenstein 3D Mac engine to run.
