Outland Chess

Outland Chess is the chess entry in the small Outland series of classic Mac board and card games, released as a sibling to Outland Hearts. Like its companion, it presents a single, focused game in a clean Mac interface, suited to a quick session at the desktop against the computer.

Chess on the Mac

The program implements standard chess: an eight-by-eight board, the usual six piece types, and the regular rules of movement, capture, check, and checkmate. The Mac styling keeps the board legible on the small displays of the era.

The Outland Series

The Outland titles share a common look and feel across games. Where Outland Hearts handles the four-player trick-taking card game, Outland Chess handles the classic two-player board game, with each release tightly scoped to its single game.

Single-Player Focus

The release is built around playing against the built-in computer opponent, in the tradition of small Mac chess utilities that emphasize a clean board and readable moves over deep analysis features.

Running Today

Outland Chess runs under a classic Mac emulator such as Mini vMac or Basilisk II with the original archive expanded into the emulated disk.
