Challenge is a HyperCard-based shareware title from Joe Hammons, distributed through the Info-Mac archive. Aimed at children and learners of all ages, it pairs short narratives with pictures so readers can practice matching text to image, with safety messages woven through the activities.
Reading Comprehension Through HyperCard
The stack uses HyperCard's familiar card-and-button interface to present narratives alongside accompanying photographs. Players read a passage and then identify the picture that fits the story, training comprehension and visual matching at the same time.
Classroom-Friendly Configuration
The author shipped the stack with the userLevel set to 3 so that students can browse and type but cannot accidentally edit the underlying scripts or graphics, making it suitable for shared school machines.
Safe, Family-Oriented Content
The author specifically notes that there are no faked photographs and no images of bodies or blood. Instead, the recurring messages encourage wearing a seat belt and not mixing alcohol with gasoline.
Distribution and Requirements
Challenge is fully functional shareware with no time-out, destruct routine, or password lock. It requires HyperCard Player to run and was posted to Info-Mac in January 2001.
